Things to do with kids near South Bank

South Bank, this area for taking kids out is really great. In these several places (listed below), parents can easily spend at least two days with the kids (in our case, as a relatively slow-paced family, if you’re just visiting, you can also finish it in one afternoon). In our family, we usually cover two buildings in one visit!

Best Things to do with Kids near South Bank

State Library of Queensland

We didn’t go there this holiday, but for kids who haven’t been, we highly recommend it. Taking your child inside to experience the strong learning atmosphere is also a great idea. The library is quite large, and during the holidays, they have special book and art activities for children on the ground floor.

Before you go, make sure to check the specific activity times. Upstairs, there are several reading areas with unbeatable views of the Brisbane River. It’s absolutely beautiful to sit by the window, soak up the sun, and read a book during the winter!

Fish Lane Brisbane

This place is easy for parents to overlook. This alley is across from the Museum and was converted from an old industrial building, which makes it quite interesting. Kids love it because there are two mysterious little doors here! Also, they have some nice coffee here, and after spending so much time with the kids, isn’t it time for parents to relax a bit? The kids can play in the small courtyard in the middle. Our kids also really like the paintings on the walls. This holiday, we spent some time taking our kids around this small area.

Queensland Museum

The most worth-visiting museum in Brisbane is the Queensland Museum. We took our kids there a while ago. Except for a dinosaur exhibition on the second floor that requires tickets, the venue is free to visit. Inside, there are mineral exhibits, various animal specimens, and explanations, allowing children to comprehensively understand various types of minerals and animal characteristics. There is also a café inside where you can sit down and take a break if you get tired from exploring.

Brisbane Sign

Further down from the museum is the Brisbane landmark, a popular spot for taking photos. Don’t forget to take some great photos here, and on the left, you can even take a ride on the Ferris wheel!

Street’s Beach + Aquativity

Take a dip in this iconic South Bank spot, entirely free. This city centre beach is just like a real one, so bring towels, sunscreen, and a day’s worth of energy. Kids will also enjoy the Aquativity water-play centre, located just to the right of Street’s Beach, which features fountains, water features, and decorations, all aimed at helping kids understand river systems and weather.

Museum of Brisbane

School holiday activities at MoB are a guide to escaping the winter chill and warming up your creativity!

Every day of the week offers exciting adventures with plenty to see and do at MoB.

School holiday activities include: Discover MoB’s curious collections in clay: Teen Screen Printed Pots, Become a detective for the day with the fun game Little Artist’s Eye Spy.

Climb the famous clock tower for a view of the city’s landmarks.

Queensland Maritime Museum

Besides the main museum, there were four ships and a lighthouse to explore. The lighthouse had lots of stairs, and the staff also denied access to my little one, even though they met the height requirement (90 cm), probably because they deemed the steep stairs a bit unsafe. Height had to be measured again at each location, so we skipped the other ships.

However, coming back to the main museum, it was quite good. It was suitable for young kids, and they even have a Lego area!

Children’s Art Centre, GOMA

On a hot summer day, when you want to find a cooler place to beat the heat, we originally went to QAGOMA to see the exhibition. Unexpectedly, we turned a corner and entered the Children’s Art Centre and just couldn’t leave! It’s just perfect for taking the kids out!

The main activities include, DIY mask making, creating a mini animation with your own character, printing patterns, origami fish crafting, a row of mirrors with animations and the DIY card making!

Where to stay with kids near the South Bank?

If you’re staying in the South Bank, you can walk across the Goodwill Bridge to reach the Brisbane Botanic Gardens on Sundays. Many people go there for their morning run, walks, and to take their children for a stroll.

W Hotel Brisbane

On our recent trip to Brisbane with our kids, we chose the W Hotel in the city center. Let’s talk about the things we like! They offer complimentary fruit tea in the lobby, which our kids loved. We stopped by every day for a cup!

The hotel has a pool on the fourth floor. There are hidden amenities, and when you walk out of the fourth-floor bar, there’s a playground shared with the neighboring apartment building. And our kids loved it!

The thing we liked the most is – the location! It is incredibly convenient. Just across the bridge is the Brisbane Museum, Art Gallery, Contemporary Art Museum, the Ferris wheel, and more. It’s extremely convenient!
