Australia entered the snow season. Before it gets too cold, bring your baby to see the snow. We searched for Mt Buller, which takes at least three hours to drive to, and since it’s mainly focused on skiing, and our kid is only three years old and not at the right age, we did some research and chose Lake Mountain!
This place is only about two hours from the city, passing through two small towns, Marysville and Healesville, where you can stop for breaks.
While driving up the mountain road, there was already snow, and the little one got excited. When we reached the top and parked, it started snowing, the snow was thick and fluffy, and it was just the right time to play in the snow.
The snowfield has two toboggan areas and a snowman-building and snow-play area.
The snowfield is well-equipped with gloves, snow boots, jackets, and toboggans for rent. There are also two cafes providing food and drinks. The staff are very friendly!
Overall, it’s suitable for families with young kids and those who just want to play in the snow. If you get bored, there are many lookouts and hiking spots nearby to explore. Highly recommended.
Address: 1071 Lake Mountain Rd, Marysville VIC 3779 (Lake Mountain Alpine Resort)
Entry Fee: $64 per vehicle (8-seater, including entry to the snowfield). Toboggan area: $20/person. (You need to bring a toboggan, or rent one for +$10.)
Opening Hours: 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Suggest wearing waterproof, non-slip shoes, snow gloves, and hats (it may snow anytime). Leave at 9 am, arrive around 10:30 am, play with the toboggan for a few hours, build snowmen, make snowballs, and have snowball fights. Return around 3–4 pm, That’s enough for little ones!
Last time, we went with friends, and they recommended a snowball-making gadget. It’s truly eye-opening. The speed of making snowballs is like a factory assembly line. There are various shapes available online, but the pressed snow doesn’t show much detail, so the simple round shape is the most practical.
No matter which snowfield you go to, check the weather and requirements on the official website before you leave, especially to see if you need snow chains for your car.
If you need to rent snow equipment, toboggans, or snow chains, it’s better to arrange this in the towns at the foot of the mountain, it’s probably cheaper and faster. There are plenty of signs along the way, and it’s easy to find.
Rent snow chains at the bottom of the mountain and put them in your car. If you don’t know how to install them, you can ask the staff to demonstrate and record it on your phone. If you really can’t figure it out, there are staff at the mountain to help, but the wait time might be long.
Also, bring at least one extra pair of pants and socks! After playing, everything will be wet, and staying wet is cold and can easily lead to a cold.
