Term 1 (Jan–Apr): Back to School in Sydney
Term 1 starts straight after the Australia Day long weekend, so late January is peak time for uniform shopping and orientation days. The Autumn School Holidays that follow line up closely with Easter most years, so if you’re heading to the coast or the Blue Mountains, book early.
Term 2 (Apr–Jul): Vivid Sydney and Cooler Weather
Term 2 covers Anzac Day and, for Sydney families, the Vivid Sydney light festival usually runs through late May and into June. As the Winter School Holidays approach, school holiday programs at museums and indoor play centres tend to fill up fast.
Term 3 (Jul–Sep): Winter in NSW
This is the coldest stretch of the year, so the Spring School Holidays that follow are a good time to start planning warmer trips. It’s also the best time to lock in Christmas travel, since prices only climb closer to December.
Term 4 (Oct–Dec): Wrapping Up the School Year
Term 4 runs through to just before Christmas. By the time the Summer School Holidays start, Sydney’s beach season is well underway. NSW’s Summer break is the longest of the year, running right through to late January — the busiest and priciest time to travel, so book ahead where you can.
