We’ve always wanted to go horse riding by the beach, capturing beautiful photos. After researching several options, we chose Gunnamatta Trail Rides! Their beach ride requires no prior horse riding experience, making it perfect for beginners. (Many places require riders to have some experience for beach rides). Also, their beach ride doesn’t just stick to the shore; it also includes a jungle ride! Essentially, you get to experience two types of horse riding for the price of one!
We opted for the beach ride, costing around $300 for approximately two hours. The experience was fantastic, allowing me to explore the bush and enjoy the sea breeze while watching the sunset on the beach. What’s crucial is that this place is very close to the Mornington Hot Springs, so you can head straight there to relax and unwind after the ride.
The experience
We booked the St Andrews Beach Ride on the Gunnamatta Trail Rides website, which is relatively cheaper compared to other rides. The scenery was amazing, especially when we reached the beach – it was truly stunning.
The rides are available only on weekdays at 1 pm and 3 pm, each lasting two hours. We rode from the stable to the beach, spent about 20-30 minutes there, and then rode back. Most of the time was spent riding on the trails. It’s essential to listen carefully to the coach. My horse was incredibly obedient!
We set off with a guide, passing through forests, reaching the beach, and finally returning. It’s not a continuous run; there’s a mix of walking, trotting, and occasional short bursts of speed.
Before departure, they provide instructions on horse riding techniques and safety precautions, so even if you’re not experienced, there’s no need to worry. Each horse has its name and personality! It’s a matter of fate which horse you’ll be matched with!
Before the ride
First, select your desired activity on their website, then choose the date and time for booking. After confirmation, they will send you an email, and at least a day before your ride, you need to sign a waiver; otherwise, your reservation may be cancelled. On the day of your appointment, arrive 30 minutes before your scheduled time for check-in.
They will provide you with a suitable helmet, and the leader will give instructions on horse control skills and safety precautions. No need to worry, as the horses are generally well-behaved.
Location: 150 Sandy Rd, Fingal VIC 3939
Additional tips
Make sure to book in advance! Otherwise, you might miss out on a spot. You can book on their website or call, as shown in the last image. However, the website charges a $12 processing fee, so we recommend calling to reserve.
Don’t put your phone in your pocket; it might fall out. They provide a fanny pack on-site, but it’s quite dirty. If you have your own fanny pack, bring it. No other bags or keys are allowed while riding to avoid burdening the horses. There’s a place to store keys, and bags should be left in your car.
The horse saddles can be quite dirty; bringing wet wipes is a good idea. Also, consider wearing dark-coloured clothes.
If possible, choose a day after rain; the ground will be wet. Walking through the bush after rain is much cleaner.
Taking photos during the bush ride is not allowed; there’s only a brief two-minute photo opportunity by the beach. The instructor will take individual photos for you and your friends. Seize the opportunity when the instructor is busy with others.
After horse riding, you can dine at the restaurant (St Andrews Beach Brewery) across the street.
