A Unique Oyster Farm Dining Experience Near Sydney

On the day we returned to Sydney from Hunter Valley, we booked the “Immerse Yourself” experience at Sydney Oyster Farm. From Sydney city it takes about one hour to drive to Kangaroo Point Boat Ramp, where everyone gathers and waits for the speedboat pickup.

At the beginning someone picks everyone up at the jetty. There are usually around 30 people in a group. The boat already has the clothes prepared, and they contact you beforehand to confirm the clothing size.

We first took a speedboat with the guide to the oyster farm in the water. While enjoying the natural scenery, the guide talked about the history of the oyster farm and explained the early and middle stages of oyster growth. After that the boat stops at the oyster farming area where they give an introduction for about half an hour.

When passing nearby islands, they briefly talk about the history and show you the rocks, but it’s more like a quick look along the way.

After that we continued to the dining area built in the water. From a distance you can see a row of tables covered with white tablecloths standing in the sparkling water.

Before getting off the boat everyone needs to put on waterproof overalls and boots. They are one-piece and easy to wear. After that you can walk into the water and start dining. The location is very close to the shore, so there are no big waves and the water is not very deep.

The meal includes a large tray of oysters and prawns, and they also provide water and wine, although you can bring your own drinks if you prefer. Each person receives 18 Sydney Rock oysters, some prawns, and a glass of wine.

Someone on site teaches you how to open the oysters yourself, which makes the experience very engaging. I didn’t manage to learn it, but my friend did. My friend had a great time and we all enjoyed the experience.

I have to say the oysters are really sweet. I absolutely loved them and ate a lot. Everyone else in the group finished their oysters, but we couldn’t finish ours. We still had more than 10 left and ended up giving them to the people nearby.

The fresh oysters and prawns have a salty taste from the sea, which makes the experience quite special. As an oyster lover, you really should visit an oyster farm at least once and enjoy unlimited oysters.

The price is $219 per person. Booking online is recommended.

One thing to note is that the waterproof outfit may leak a little water, so it’s a good idea to bring an extra pair of socks. The three of us had two pairs of boots that leaked slightly.

The only downside was the sun. We were exposed to the sun for about 20 minutes while on the boat, and I regretted not bringing a hat or sunscreen.

As an extra little experience, you can also see fish swimming around in the water.
