Māori Mythology in the Ocean: Sydney Te Wheke Exhibition

Te Wheke-a-Muturangi: The Adversary is part of the 2024 Sydney Festival series!

This exhibition is a masterpiece crafted by the talented interdisciplinary Maori artist, Lisa Reihana from New Zealand. She brings an ancient Maori legend to life on the waters of Sydney. Imagine a colossal octopus sculpture, composed of over 1000 parts, floating gently on the waves, illuminated by sunlight and the sparkle of the sea, seemingly infused with life!

In this legendary tale, Te Wheke is a giant octopus chased by Polynesian fisherman Kupe, who is believed to be the first discoverer of New Zealand. The epic battle was so intense that the red of the sunset is said to be the bloodshed during their conflict. This mythical octopus is crossing the Tasman Sea to meet us in Sydney!

On the opening day, the Te Aranganui choir will bring traditional Maori songs, allowing us to experience the charm of Maori culture together.

You can also scan the code on-site to listen to the story or take a kayak for a close encounter with this mysterious sculpture!
