The Hellenic Museum in Melbourne is a little-known treasure, but it comes highly recommended! Our kid stumbled upon this museum by chance, recognising three paintings at the entrance that were related to Greek mythology. After a quick online search, we booked an activity at the museum and had an amazing experience! We arrived right when the museum opened and took a tour of the exhibits.
What we think
There were numerous sculptures and pottery artworks showcasing different stages of Greek culture. Make sure to visit the room on the ground floor featuring the statue of Goddess Iris; it’s incredibly beautiful and atmospheric. Upstairs, there’s a room dedicated to the torches designed by each Olympic host country, which is quite an eye-opener!
The activity started at 10:30 AM.
The museum staff were very enthusiastic and led the children on a 45-minute indoor tour and explanation. Our kid, being recently obsessed with Greek mythology, interacted a lot with the staff and answered most of the questions.
The following 45 minutes were spent outdoors, where the staff introduced two ancient Greek sports in the garden, adapting them into fun games suitable for kids. The children were divided into two groups for a friendly competition, which was a lot of fun.
The Hellenic Museum offers different Holiday Programs each vacation, which you can find and register for on their website. For kids interested in Greek culture, this museum is a must-visit!
How long to spend at Hellenic Museum?
The exhibition hall isn’t very large; an hour and a half to two hours is more than enough time to walk through and take photos. However, if you want to read the descriptions in detail, it’s recommended to allocate some extra time!
Where is the Hellenic Museum
