Tanghulu Skewers in Melbourne

We have tried the current trendiest treat in Melbourne – the Tanghulu. You can easily spot 5-6 people eating these Tanghulu just walking down the street. Two days ago, we went to try the new Stubborn Pig Korean BBQ and discovered it’s right next door! We were sitting near the door, and the crowd next door was so big that they spilled over to the BBQ restaurant entrance. After finishing our BBQ, we grabbed the Tanghulu skewer!

What is Tang Hu Lu?

Tang Hu Lu is a traditional Chinese snack consists of glistening syrup encasing sweet and tangy hawthorn berries. It is delicious and festive, embodying the full spirit of the New Year. Nowadays, with strawberries, oranges, grapes, blueberries, and various other fruits available, it seems that almost anything can be made into tanghulu.

What we ordered

We bought five flavours, each skewer costing $8.5! The strawberries were huge!

The best part is the incredible sweetness, even better than the ones from night markets before. The outer sugar coating is very crisp but not sticky, with a thin layer that doesn’t overpower the fruit’s flavour.

If you only get one skewer, we highly recommend the all-strawberry or the mixed one (strawberry, kiwi, pineapple). We also got a cup of freshly squeezed white grape juice, which was excellent.

The new Stubborn Pig Korean BBQ next door is delicious and highly recommended!
