You have just found the perfect school for your child! And you also have an interview with the school next week. Now you may get a little nervous as you are not sure what you are likely to get asked.

What types of questions to expect

The interview is more for the principal to get to know your kid. The questions will mostly be directed to your kid. Interview provides the principal a chance to ask your kid questions to find out:

  • Where your kid is at
  • Where they fit best
  • If your kid is ready for school
  • Your kid’s strengths and weaknesses

  • Why do you choose our school?
  • Do you have any specific requirements i.e family arrangements?
  • Do you think your kid is ready for school?
  • Can you share any concerns you may have had?
  • Does your child have any learning difficulties?
  • What are your future educational plans for your child?
  • Can you describe the characteristics of your ideal college?
  • What do you expect your child to get from us?
  • How do you perceive the concept of education?
  • How do you generally discipline your children?
  • How does your child interact with others?
  • What types of activities do they enjoy?
  • What do you anticipate will be your child’s reaction to commencing school and separating from you?

  • What is your favourite book?
  • What subject do you enjoy the most?
  • Do you play any musical instrument?
  • What is one place you’d like travel to?
  • What do you do in your spare time?
  • Do you have any hobbies or interests?
  • Do you love sports? What is your favourite sport?

Catholic school interview questions and tips

What happens if you are not Catholic but you are going to have an interview at a Catholic school? Don’t stress, actually some Catholic schools are only 60% baptised children.

Some schools might not discuss about religion at all in their interviews or none of the questions will be centred around it.

Although here are some of the questions they might ask depending on the school:

  • Do you (and your family) attend church
  • How active as a member you are within your local church
  • Which church is your local church

If you are not Catholic, the biggest top for you would be to just be honest and don’t try and come across as religious. For example, If you’re asked whether you attend church, just be honest and say no.

  • Stay calm
  • Be polite
  • Maintain eye contact
  • Try to answer in full sentences rather than just Yes or No
  • Do not get distracted by phone or iPad or toys

School interview tips for parents

  • Make sure you arrive on time
  • Don’e answer questions directed at your kid
  • Make sure your kid is wearing clean uniform or casual cloths that conform to the school’s dress code
  • Be honest
