The Little Black Shack, this cozy little house is located on Great Mackerel Beach, accessible by ferry from Palm Beach. After getting off the boat, it’s a ten-minute walk north along the beach to reach this secluded island home. You’ll want to bring everything you need, as there are no shops on the island!
When we arrived, it started raining, and after some effort, we found the house. It’s located at the northernmost part of the island. Once inside, we looked out at the skies and the scattered light of the sunset over the sea, with the warm, dim lighting and rustic furniture in the house. It felt like a true escape from the world, and we felt completely relaxed!
Although you need to bring your own food, the house is fully equipped with kitchenware and seasonings. They even provide flour and yeast, so you can bake bread or pizza. We only discovered the crab traps and fishing rods as we were leaving. So even if you come empty-handed, you won’t starve!
The island pier, with the ferry and community centre. The island is home to 100 households, but only 10 are permanent residents, so it’s generally peaceful. The sunshine, beach, and coast will feel like your private retreat!
The cabin bathed in sunlight during the day. we loved every corner of it. Even doing nothing but soaking in the sunshine felt wonderful. The cabin at dusk and dawn. You can even see the sunrise from the bed in the bedroom.
We hand-kneaded the pizza dough and baked it in the oven, along with some BBQ. Paired with wine and candlelight, it was simply delicious.
Their garden has many herbs, including the mint we picked fresh from the garden!
Overall, this was one of our best Airbnb experience to date! The hosts spent months renovating the cabin, and every detail reflects their love for the place and their desire to share their passion for nature. All the furniture and decorations are second-hand or made from recycled materials. The cabin is available to book on Airbnb, but it’s quite popular, so you’ll need to book at least three months in advance.
