Located approximately 1,200 kilometres (745 miles) north of Perth, Ningaloo Reef is a sparkling gem in Western Australia’s crown. The coral reefs along its coastline have been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Ningaloo’s most captivating feature is the whale sharks. It’s one of the world’s largest gathering spots for these gentle giants, and during their migration season, whale sharks swim alongside manta rays, sea turtles, and humpback whales in these waters.
Best Things to Do at Ningaloo Reef
- Join a guided kayaking or snorkeling tour.
- Swim with the world’s largest fish: From March to July each year, Ningaloo Reef is possibly the best place in the world to witness whale sharks. Leap from a boat into the blue and effortlessly glide alongside these harmless giants.
- Swim with humpback whales: From July to October, around 40,000 humpback whales migrate southward through Ningaloo Reef, and several licensed operators offer opportunities to swim with them.
- Board a glass-bottom boat to see the coral reefs without getting wet. These boats are designed for easy access, are suitable for children, and provide safety equipment.
- Scenic flights offer a fantastic way to view the stunning landscapes of Ningaloo and Cape Range.
- Luxurious eco-camp at Sal Salis: For a unique Ningaloo experience, indulge in Sal Salis, an eco-luxury wilderness camp located right next to the coral reef and within the national park.
- Try ocean fly fishing: Fly fishing isn’t just for freshwater, and there’s no better place to try it in the ocean than Ningaloo Reef. Catch bonefish in the calm waters of Exmouth Gulf or go offshore for powerful sailfish.
- Cruise through Yardie Creek Gorge: Join a one-hour boat trip, ascend Yardie Creek, and enter the gorge system. Learn about local European and Indigenous history, spot ospreys and egrets, and discover black-footed rock wallabies clinging to steep cliffs.
