Wombat Bend Playground is such a peaceful little park by the Yarra River — when it’s quiet, you can even hear the sound of the water flowing.
The playground is fully fenced, which makes it feel really safe. One of my favorite things here is the dense greenery — even the sandpit is covered with shade from the trees, so it stays nice and cool in summer. That said, there can be mosquitoes, so don’t forget protection for the kids.

We discovered this park when my kids were still really little, and even now that they’re older, they never get bored. Every visit ends the same way — they don’t want to leave. There’s something for every age: sandpit, water play, slides and a musical bridge for younger kids, plus climbing nets, a wooden maze, flying fox, and lots of bat-themed play equipment for the bigger ones.
If you want a bit of nature play, there’s also an area nearby that teaches kids how to build cubby houses using branches. Bring a bike and ride along the Yarra Trail — it’s perfect for kids. Pack some food and a picnic mat, and you can easily spend the whole day here.
The facilities are a bit old, but still charming. My kid’s favorite is the spinning swing, and the long flying fox is always a hit. There are benches and little seats everywhere — perfect for parents to take a break.
The colorful mosaic tiles scattered around the park add a playful touch to this hidden gem. After school hours, it can get busy with older kids, so it’s best to avoid that time if you prefer it quiet.
The playground itself isn’t huge, but the biggest advantage is that it’s enclosed — no stress about kids running off.
Highlights
Right at the entrance, there’s a mini wooden maze with little wombat footprints on the ground — super cute and very on theme. It’s not too big, so even my 3-year-old could navigate it easily. Inside, there are mirrors and sound-activated features that kids love.
There’s a large bat-shaped swing that can fit up to three kids.
The flying fox here is thoughtfully designed with two options: a standard round seat and another with a backrest and safety lock. The locked seat is a lifesaver for younger kids — no need for parents to run alongside holding them the whole way!
Another fun feature is the mosaic map of the playground made with colorful tiles. The patterns are also turned into small metal markers scattered around the park — my kids ran everywhere trying to find them. It’s a fun mix of physical play and little brain challenges.
There’s also a huge sandpit with built-in digging tools and a water pump — imagine water + sand + kids… you know it’s going to be chaos in the best way.
Walk a little further and you’ll reach the Yarra River. The paths are relatively flat, making it great for walking or cycling with kids. There’s even a suspension bridge — stand there, take in the view, and enjoy that slow, relaxed Aussie lifestyle.
