Took the kids to Billubera Park in Yarrabilba today. It’s south of Brisbane, about half an hour’s drive from the south side. The name comes from the Yugambeh language and means a clear sky or fine day. It was a clear day, so that worked out.
It feels like walking into a forest. Big trees everywhere, carved decorations and animal plaques along the way, and kids were pretending to be animals within about five minutes.
The climbing tower and the bridge
The main thing is a tall climbing tower with a 10 metre suspended bridge running off it. You can get up by stairs or by rope net, so there’s an easy way and a harder way, and kids pick whichever they can manage. The brave ones can go for the tunnel slide, which is 4.5 metres high.
Flying fox
Long one. Fast. The kids didn’t want to get off it, and there was a queue at the start the whole time we were there.
The ninja course
It’s built out of timber posts and rocks rather than the usual steel and plastic, and it has a timer, so they can race the clock or race each other. A couple of the kids kept going back for another go to beat their time.
Little kids’ area
There’s a small fort, a bird’s nest swing, a four-seat seesaw and a spinner that wheelchairs can use. The toddler fort is on the lower level, away from the big tower.
Sport area
A three-way basketball court and a big lawn. Good for a ball, a kite or a bike.
Forest play
Rocks and logs to balance along, so the floor is lava was an easy game to start. The plaques about native animals give them something to pretend to be.

For parents
- Wide paths that suit prams and wheelchairs
- Toilets with baby change tables
- Shade sails and tree shade
- BBQs and picnic tables, with power outlets
- Parking along the street
Things to know
It’s not fenced. The park is spread over a few levels, so if you’ve got more than one kid it can be hard to keep track of everyone. The basketball court and the ninja area have almost no shade, so in summer you’ll want sunscreen and hats.
Location: Grampians Circuit, Yarrabilba, near South Rock State School.
