Most Beautiful Libraries in Sydney
Woollahra Library at Double Bay
This is one of the most beautiful libraries in Australia as rated by Australian media. The library has three levels, all filled with greenery, from the vertical plant wall to the cascading vines hanging from the upper level, giving you the feeling of being in an indoor garden.
If you’re driving there, you can find parking spots on the street, but it’s a paid parking area (we paid a little over $5 for one hour). If you’re taking the train, you can get off at Edgecliff train station and it’s about a 10-minute walk. Public buses seem to be just a 2-minute walk away.
This library is located inside a shopping center and spans three levels. The moment you step inside, you’ll be greeted by a large Returns area and a wall of greenery that took me by surprise!
The entire library is filled with green plants, and there are numerous lush pothos plants trailing down. It’s like stepping into a forest; no wonder so many people love visiting this library. It’s an instant mood lifter, and I imagine it would make studying more enjoyable.
The first floor has a colourful children’s area, event space, self-service returns, and a large balcony. As soon as you enter, there’s the Kids Zone, equipped with many interactive play devices. The best part is there’s even a slide!
The second floor primarily houses adult books, CDs, magazines, study areas, and even a gaming space.
The third floor is mainly for quiet study. It’s quieter than the other floors.
We highly recommend this place to anyone who loves to study. The environment is genuinely great! If we were still a student, we would definitely come here often!
For those who don’t enjoy studying or don’t need to, you can also visit to take photos, read books, and explore. Just taking a stroll inside will undoubtedly boost your spirits and make your day better!

The Exchange Darling Square
The Darling Square Library is a new library that opened in 2019, replacing the Haymarket Library, and is located on two floors of a six-level bird’s nest structure. Located in Darling Harbour, the library has a prime location and a 360-degree view, so when you’re tired of studying, you can take in the view.
Plus, it’s a new library with not many people, and there are many books and comics to choose from.
Whether you’re looking for a place to escape the summer heat or hoping to instill the habit of going to the library in your children, this is an excellent choice.
The library has two levels, and on regular days, there are hardly any people except for the staff. The children’s section is on the upper floor, with shelves filled with children’s picture books.
Things we like about this library:
- Convenient transportation, about a 10-minute walk from Central Station.
- There’s a creative food court downstairs in the library where you can buy a meal and sit under the shade of trees in the outdoor square.
- The outdoor dining chairs are surprisingly comfortable, making it great for nursing. Of course, there are also plenty of tasty eateries to choose from.
- There are diaper changing facilities in the library and food court restrooms.
- The adjacent Darling Quarter large lawn is also suitable for spreading out a picnic blanket for your baby to play.
Marrickville Library and Pavilion
This is also a library that I have been keeping a secret for a long time. Located in Marrickville, the library was built on the site of an old hospital. The designer managed to reuse 27,000 bricks from the old building in the new construction, preserving the women’s ward as the current reading room.
This community library strikes a balance between modern and vintage styles. Personally, we really like it. It features many large, solid wood columns. Being here, you can experience a fully immersive sense of tranquillity, without feeling overwhelmed by the antique charm of books!
With its unique wooden theme, as soon as you walk in, you can smell the calming wood fragrance. Every corner is thoughtfully designed by the designer to create a sense of beauty, making it a great place for sightseeing and exploration.
Facilities include unlimited free WiFi (with good speed!), free hot water, and a great cafe inside the library.
The library has its own cafe, and the offerings are above average. The coffee, made with Double Roasters beans, has a delightful chocolate note, and the cold drip is only $4! There are plenty of sandwich options, and they are delicious. You can rest assured you don’t need to bring lunch because the cafe has floor-to-ceiling window seats!
Green Square Library
This library is also very popular on social media and is known as the most beautiful library in NSW. From the outside, it may be difficult to tell that it is a library as it looks more like a cafe.
In the centre of the library is an outdoor sunken garden with a very unique design. The library is made up of two buildings, a triangular glass house and a square glass house. Each floor of the square glass house has a different function, and at night it lights up like a large neon sign.
State Library of NSW
The State Library of NSW, located near Circular Quay, is a classical European-style sandstone building situated next to the Royal Botanic Garden. The State Library not only has year-round exhibitions, but also world-class international exhibitions.
In addition, there are plenty of weekly public activities and free movie screenings, as well as regular free guided tours of the two libraries. The library has a café, free WiFi and a large study room!
On the first floor of the NSW State Library, right next to the Early Learning Centre, there is a small but cozy book nook. It offers a wealth of exquisite picture books for children to read for free. It’s a perfect place for nurturing children’s reading interests! All the picture books here are carefully selected by the library staff.
