Western Australia has various colourful salt lakes, and because many are wild, it’s challenging to spot them from the roadside without an aerial view. Making a special trip might not be necessary for many people, as the journey is quite long, several hours away from the city, and there aren’t many entertainment attractions nearby.
This is recommended for those planning a self-drive trip to Western Australia, especially for those planning to visit Wave Rock. You can make a detour to visit the salt lake, which has a lemon colour.
Lake Magic – Things you need to know
If you’ve always been intrigued by the mystery of the Dead Sea, you might be interested in learning about the ‘Dead Sea’ of Australia – Lake Magic.
Located in the town of Hyden in Western Australia, Lake Magic is situated 292 kilometres southeast of Perth. This region has numerous naturally formed salt lakes, each with its unique colours – some are yellow, some pink, some white, and some blue. Lake Magic, however, showcases a Tiffany blue!
The salt content in Lake Magic is much higher than that of the Dead Sea, and it’s believed to offer even better therapeutic effects. It’s advised not to touch your eyes while in the water, as it can be uncomfortable. You don’t need to know how to swim; just relax, and you can effortlessly float on the water’s surface at Lake Magic Swimming Pond in Hyden.
Our experience
Without these salt lakes, we probably wouldn’t have chosen to spend a round trip of 8 hours to see Wave Rock. Trust me, this place is truly worth staying overnight!
This time, heading south, we chose Hyden (the town where Wave Rock is located) as a resting point and stayed a total of two nights in this small town.
Lake Magic Swimming Pond, the green pool in the picture, is, in reality, filled with salt lake water. The salt content is off the charts, and even if you can’t swim, you can jump right in. The experience is exactly like the Dead Sea. When we were there, we saw someone lying in the water!
Plan your stay
Besides the most famous Pink Lake, there are numerous salt lakes of various sizes and colours. Departing from Perth towards Esperance, if you choose the inland route via Hyden, you’ll come across many gem-like coloured salt lakes.
Firstly, the most convenient and easily accessible is the green Salty Swimming Pond + Lake Magic lemon-coloured salt lake at Wave Rock Resort.
You can book nearby vacation homes in advance or stay overnight in Wave Rock’s vacation homes or campsites. The downside is that there are no other entertainment facilities here, only various natural landscapes and Western Australia’s specialties like flies and small animals. On a clear day, you can enjoy a beautiful starry sky, making it suitable for nature enthusiasts.
The lemon-coloured lake is right next to the resort, and you can stop by to take pictures when passing by. The white salt lake boardwalk is also nearby, and if you stay nearby, you can leisurely hike and take photos during the day. The aerial view is also stunning, so I recommend bringing a drone to explore!
