Rouse Hill Estate is a hidden weekend spot in Sydney. Built in 1816, this historic estate has over 200 years of history and was once the private home of six generations of the Rouse family. Today it is managed by the New South Wales government and is open to the public for free every Sunday.
The estate is located at 356 Annangrove Road, Rouse Hill. It is open every Sunday from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm and visitors need to book a free ticket online before arriving. There is free parking at the entrance, and if you are using public transport you can take the metro to Rouse Hill Station and then transfer to bus 740 or 643.
One of the highlights is the animal feeding session at 10:30 am every Sunday. Staff bring visitors to feed the animals and each person receives a small portion of feed. Visitors can get close to sheep, horses, chickens and cows, which makes it especially popular with children. If you want to join the feeding activity, it is best to arrive before 10:30 am.
The visitor centre provides detailed information about the history of the Rouse family and the estate. Inside there is also a large Lego room designed for children. A detailed Lego model recreates the entire estate and there are many Lego pieces available for kids to build their own creations.
In the centre of the estate stands the historic house where the Rouse family once lived. Many original objects from the past 200 years are still preserved there, giving visitors a sense of the family’s long history. Unfortunately the main house is currently under renovation and cannot be entered, but visitors can view the interior through displays in the visitor centre.
The estate also includes old stables that were once used for racehorses. Each stable still displays the name of the horse that once lived there. There is also a historic schoolhouse with a recreated classroom showing what education was like in the past, including old teaching tools and animal specimens used for learning about nature.
The entire estate is quite large, with buildings and animal areas spread out across the property, so expect to walk a fair amount. If visiting with young children, bringing a stroller may be helpful. The visit usually takes around two hours to explore comfortably.
There is very little shade across the estate, so it is important to bring sun protection, sunglasses and a hat. Bringing a water bottle is also recommended, as water can only be refilled at the visitor centre.
Overall, it is a very relaxing place to spend a weekend. With historic buildings, open green spaces and opportunities to interact with animals, it is a great free outing for families with children in Sydney.
