Best Stargazing Spots in Brisbane

brisbane star gazing

In Queensland, where there are about 300 sunny days a year, however as long as it’s a clear night you can always go stargazing!

The Milky Way season in Australia is from late February to the end of October, and sometimes it can still be seen and photographed until the end of November. The best time to see it is between 9-10 pm or late at night between 12-1 am. If you look carefully, you might even see a shooting star!

Remember to bring a camp chair, a blanket, a thermos, and some snacks because it can get really cold at night, and many places do not have chairs.

Top Stunning Stargazing Spots Around Brisbane

Lake Wivenhoe – Lake Wivonhoe Campground

This is a camping ground, so it’s best to call and make a reservation before you go. The off-peak price is $23 per site, and during peak season it’s $28 per site. Each site can accommodate up to 6 people, and if there are more than 6 people, an extra $11 per person will be charged.

It’s a relatively safe and easy-to-find place, and you can have a campfire at the site. It’s a great spot to relax with friends, chat about life and gaze at the stars. If you don’t want to stay overnight, it’s also possible to visit during the day.

Lake Wyaralong – Lake Wyaralong Sculpture Park

This place is great for spending an afternoon with friends, having a barbecue by the lake, playing games, or kayaking in the lake. At night, you can stargaze and then drive home. There is a parking lot, toilets, and outdoor BBQ grills by the lake.

There is a gate at the entrance, which should be open from 6 am to 6 pm. You cannot drive in after 6 pm, but you can leave. The suggestion is to visit in the afternoon. If you suddenly decide to go at night, you can also park your car in the nearby open space.

This is a classic stargazing spot that many friends know about. The location is at the Caravan Park. If you drive there at night, you’ll see signs for the campsite and their business hours. If you use their campsite, you’ll need to pay.

You can park your car on the side of the road and walk to the lake to stargaze and take photos. Many friends have taken amazing galaxy photos here.

Glasshouse Mountain – Sunshine Coast – Glasshouse Mountain Lookout

This mountain to the north is really a landmark, and countless people come here to climb it. If you plan to stay overnight in this area or live in the northern part of Brisbane, this is a great place to stargaze. We don’t recommend only coming here for stargazing, though. You can stay at a nearby guesthouse, hike in the morning, explore nearby shops in the afternoon, eat a meal by the beach at sunset, and then go stargazing at night. Bring your camera to capture some amazing shots!

Bunya Mountains

Since observing meteor showers requires a better dark environment, we would recommend Bunya Mountains National Park as a more suitable location. However, everyone should check the weather before travelling You won’t be able to see the stars on cloudy or rainy days. And one last tips, be sure to wear warm clothes as it can be cold at nigth!
