Best Spots to see Snow in Sydney This Year

see snow in sydney

Do you know in Winter, the temperature in some areas around Sydney can drop to 2°, which means that we can now go wild in the snow!

Even if we’re not professional skiers, we shouldn’t miss the beautiful snowy landscapes that will be here for the next few months. In this post, we will share a few dreamy snow-viewing spots near Sydney!

Best Spots to see Snow in Sydney

The Blue Mountains

If you want to see snow without going too far from the city, the Blue Mountains are the top choice! The best bet would be between June and August. The Blue Mountains typically experience snowfall for only a few days each year, so make sure you check the weather forecasts and snow reports for the Blue Mountains area before your trip!

Compared to Oberon, the Blue Mountains are closer to Sydney, only about a two-hour drive away. Moreover, there is a well-known hot spring in the Blue Mountains called the Japanese Bath House. If you can time it just right to coincide with the snowfall, you can enjoy the snow scenery while soaking in the hot springs, giving you a feeling similar to that of Hokkaido, Japan!

Spots near Blue Mountains you might encounter snow are Katoomba, Blackheath and Mount Victoria.

The Snowy Mountains

Located between Sydney and Melbourne, Thredbo and Charlotte have many skiing resorts. Adventurous friends can also go mountain biking and hiking. The scenery is stunning!

Ski resorts near Sydney are concentrated in the snowy mountains of Kosciuszko National Park, located in New South Wales near the border with Victoria. They include Australia’s two most famous world-class skiing destinations: Perisher and Thredbo (both about a 50-minute drive apart).

Starting from Sydney, travellers will pass through the capital city of Canberra, which can be used as a rest stop for a meal or an overnight stay.

Perisher

Perisher is about a 5.5-hour drive from Sydney and has four main ski resorts. It is said to be the largest ski resort in Australia, with activities ranging from snowboarding to skiing to mountain climbing, as well as snow exploration. There are also plenty of resorts, cafes and bars with beautiful valley views.

Thredbo

Thredbo has been named the best ski resort in Australia several times in a row. Other than skiing, Candlelight Lodge’s German restaurant is another reason why we come to Thredbo for skiing every year! After a day on the slopes, you can spend your time in this warm and cozy Candlelight Lodge, facing the beautiful snow-capped mountains, and enjoy a delicious German beer with some German sausages and pork knuckles. It’s so amazing!

Corin Forest

Corin Forest is about a 4-hour drive from Sydney and located in the Tidbinbilla Mountains, about 45 minutes from Canberra. It’s in a secluded valley where kids aged 8+ can learn to ski. If you have time, you can also go to The Sugar Pine Walk, Bago State Forest. It’s a magical place in nature.

Mt Canobolas

Located east of Orange, it’s a volcano that erupted 13 million years ago. It’s the highest peak between Sydney and Perth, and the top of the mountain is covered in snow during winter.

Mt Canobolas typically receives snowfall on an average of 10-20 days per year, although this can vary widely depending on the year!

Go to a small town:

For those who don’t like adventurous outdoor activities, you can stay in Oberon town or Orange town! Just pick a place, find a clean guesthouse, and enjoy the snow scenery outside the window with a cup of hot cocoa! Many bloggers recommend the epic snowy scenery near the pine plantations in Oberon on Instagram. It’s super photogenic!

The surrounding Millionth Acre Recreation Area and Black Springs are in different directions, with stunning views!

Hunter Valley Gardens is a popular spot that’s a 2-hour drive from Sydney! Every year, they hold snow activities, and this year’s event runs from 24 June – 23 July 2023!
