Sydney Blue Mountains Zig Zag Steam Train

Sydney Zig Zag Steam Train

As a Harry Potter fan, we missed the steam train in Melbourne, so we decided to experience Sydney’s version of a steam train ride to Hogwarts!

It’s just 2+ hour drive from Sydney toward the Blue Mountains. The Zig Zag Steam Train in NSW dates back to the 1870s, restored to its former glory by dedicated volunteers. The journey offers amazing views of gorges within a stone park and the skeletal remains of eucalyptus trees burned by wildfires. Accompanied by the sound of the steam whistle and the rich scent of coal steam, the ride feels like stepping back in time!

The locomotive changes direction a few times. It’s recommended to sit on the side closest to the platform initially, as most of the scenic views are on that side.

If boarding at Clarence Station, face the train: the left side is the rear, and the right side is the front!

At Top Point Station, you can hop off to enjoy the view from the footbridge.

The ride is all about experiencing the charm of a steam train. It’s a round trip lasting about 90 minutes, returning to the original station.

Honestly, it was quite an enjoyable experience!

Highly recommended for families with kids who love trains!

Regardless of the season, make sure to dress warmly! It was freezing the day we went!
