Half Moon Bay is really beautiful! We actually didn’t expect such beauty around Melbourne, and it’s great for photography too! Every shot is like a masterpiece, there is no need for your instagram filters!
The overall landscape is actually quite similar to the Twelve Apostles on the Great Ocean Road, with a bit of a feeling of Uluru and Kings Canyon. It’s very close to the city and perfect for a day trip.
Is it worth a visit?
Melbourne’s stunning hidden gem beach. It features wind-eroded sandstone cliffs, a narrow coastline, and the iconic wreck of HMVS Cerberus. Especially during sunset, the magnificent landscape of half ocean, makes it the perfect place for photography enthusiasts, picnics, leisurely walks, enjoying the sea breeze, and watching the sunset with friends or family.
The experience
During summer, it can get quite crowded. A half-day trip is sufficient; leaving around noon and returning by 6 PM allows you to catch the sunset. You can also bring camping gear for weekends. There are many sports enthusiasts here, with activities like sailing, kayaking, swimming, and even parasailing on the hills.
Regarding photography, around 7 AM is the best time with beautiful lighting, avoiding overexposure and excessive sun exposure. You can even stay to watch the sunset, which is truly stunning!
There’s a great atmosphere at the pier with restaurants, but they only open for lunch and dinner. Downstairs, there’s a place selling fish and chips; portions are generous, but sauce costs extra.
Tips for those who plan to visit
- Always bring sunscreen; Australian UV rays are strong and can cause sunburn.
- Comfortable flip-flops/sandals to prevent scratches from rocks and hot sand.
- Bring your own swimsuit and equipment; the area doesn’t sell them but perfect for sunbathing.
- If planning to watch the sunset, bring warm outerwear and mosquito repellent.
- If planning to see shipwrecks, check low tide times in advance.
- Bring garbage bags; it’s hard to find trash bins on the beach.
- Pets are allowed; it’s a very dog-friendly beach.
- It’s difficult to get Uber here; if not driving, pay attention to train times.
- For hikers, you can walk along the shoreline barefoot in the seawater or along the boardwalk or road, enjoying the coastal scenery and exquisite architecture.
