Unique Things to Do on Bruny Island

Get Shucked Oyster Farm (Opening Hours: 9.30am-4.30pm)

We have to say that this is the best-tasting oyster in all of Australia! A dozen fresh oysters cost $26. You can get the mixed dozen (fried, grilled, and fresh) for $30. Not only can you enjoy the freshest and most delicious oysters, but you can also observe the oyster processing and handling!

Bruny Island Cheese Company (Opening Hours: 9.30am-5.00pm)

Here you will find the most famous handmade cheese in all of Australia (free tastings) and sweet-tasting homemade beer.

Bruny Island Honey

This shop has a live beehive where you can watch the bees at work. They have various types of honey (which you can taste for free), cosmetics, skincare products, souvenirs, and ice cream. It is a favourite destination for children.

Visiting The Neck

The Neck means arriving at the boundary between North and South Bruny Island. A 279-step staircase leads to a lookout point. Standing on the observation deck, you can enjoy the unique sea view of turbulent waves on one side and calm seas on the other. This is also the habitat of short-tailed seabirds and little penguins.

At dusk, you can see the cute little penguins returning to their caves from the sea. It definitely is a must-go place for all stargazers and ocean lovers!!! After dark, this is the place to enjoy the starry sky and the sea!

Bruny Island Chocolate Co.

This is a roadside store that sells delicious homemade chocolates and soft candy.

Cape Bruny Lighthouse

Built in 1836, the Bruny Cape Lighthouse is the only lighthouse in southern Tasmania that can be visited. It is also the second oldest surviving lighthouse in Australia. You have to climb a steep path to reach the base of the lighthouse.

Raspberry Farm

Which is about a 10-minute drive away from the Chocolate Company. This place is quite interesting, as there is a large raspberry orchard and even white peacocks! Be sure to try the raspberry waffle ice cream, which the shop owner highly recommends. It has a rich flavour of both raspberry and milk and is definitely worth trying!

Getting to Bruny Island – Ferry Terminal

To get to Bruny Island, you can drive from Hobart and arrive at the Kettering Ferry Terminal in approximately 30 minutes. The ferry departs every 20 minutes, starting as early as 6 or 7 in the morning. The latest ferry back to the mainland from Bruny Island is at 7:15 pm. If you have enough time, you can choose to stay on the island in accommodations or go camping.

Currently, the round-trip ticket price for a small car (less than 6 meters in length) is $48.50, but prices may vary depending on the date and time of travel.
