Looking for somewhere to go on Melbourne’s free transport weekend? The seaside town of Sorrento is worth it. We went to this Italian-style seaside town that’s super popular on social media some time ago with friends. That little alley that’s really famous online is honestly just a very ordinary small town in real life.
Although the journey takes a while, the scenery along the way is already beautiful. Once you arrive, you’ll feel like Sorrento is truly the most worthwhile stop on the peninsula.
If you’re driving and already made it to Mornington, we strongly recommend continuing further down. The road after Mornington is actually the most beautiful part.
The town itself is nice to stroll around. The main street is lively and full of shops. That viral photo spot (the alley) is a small lane, it’s inside a black iron gate directly opposite the vanilla cake dessert shop. It’s right on the main street anyway, so you can just glance at it while passing by. There are also many other Italian-style restaurants that we didn’t get to try.
The viral dessert shop’s vanilla cake is worth trying. It’s better for two or three people to share one slice just to try. I had one bite and found it a bit sweet.
We ate at a seaside restaurant. It was around $70 per person. The food was pretty good, we’d say it was tasty. Definitely choose a window seat if you can. Eating with the ocean view is really comfortable and relaxing. The scenery is beautiful.
Overall, the town itself is very comfortable, relaxing, and quiet. You can wander through little shops and take photos. It’s quite nice. The seaside is beautiful too.
We went there from Rye Beach because we had already spent a long time at Rye. So when we got to Sorrento, we didn’t go to the beach again for photos.
We recommend going to Sorrento Beach first. Then walk to Millionaire’s Walk. It’s truly a beautiful path. All the earlier photos were taken along this walk. On the left you will find the ocean and private jetties.
When we were planning the trip, we couldn’t find any clear directions online explaining how to get there. Following the map isn’t that straightforward and can lead you in circles. We walked around for quite a while.
Sorrento Back Beach has a completely different vibe. We recommend walking up the stairs on the right to Coppins Lookout.
You can continue walking down from the lookout. The path doesn’t go very far, it’s basically a short coastal trail. It ends near the spot where stairs lead down to the beach. You’ll have to return the same way.
