Shamarra Alpacas Farm – New Zealand’s Most Beautiful Alpaca Farm

Shamarra Alpacas Farm

Shamarra Alpacas Farm is located in the seaside town of Akaroa, more than an hour’s drive from the centre of Christchurch, there is an alpaca farm that looks like a fairy tale world! Don’t miss it when you travel to Christchurch!

Here, you can freely pet and feed alpacas. Throughout the experience, there are staff members accompanying and explaining alpaca-related knowledge. Our guide even helped us find alpacas with good personalities for better photo opportunities!

The farm is situated on a hill, offering a breathtaking view of the bay – the scenery is just stunning!

Our experience

We finally fulfilled the wish of interacting with alpacas on the alpaca farm! We made an advance reservation before coming, and it was scheduled for 11am.

We flew from Auckland to Christchurch the night before, so we set out early from Christchurch, about a 1.5-hour drive with beautiful scenery along the way! We arrived a little after 11 AM, and since there were only a few of us for the alpaca viewing today, they were already explaining alpaca fur when we arrived. After a brief introduction, our official journey of petting alpacas began!

There were many alpacas to touch and take photos with at the start, just be careful not to touch their hindquarters~ Alpaca fur is so comfortable, and if you dig your fingers in a bit, it’s really warm! No wonder they don’t get cold!

Later, we went to feed the alpacas. The little cuties were eager, following the food bowl, and we took the opportunity to interact with them a bit.

The entire tour lasts about 1 hour, starting with an introduction to some basic alpaca knowledge. You’ll learn fascinating facts about alpacas, such as how alpaca competitions actually judge the quality of their fur. For instance, the color of alpaca babies is entirely random, so two white alpacas could give birth to a brown baby.

The fluffy alpacas are incredibly friendly, although they get sheared in November.

Getting to Shamarra Alpacas Farm

If driving a small car, you can drive up to the farm gate. The road is narrow and rugged, so if driving a larger vehicle, you can park at the bottom of the hill, and the farm will have a shuttle to take guests up.
