North Road Foreshore Reserve Playground

North Road Foreshore Reserve Playground

Melbourne’s weather has been perfect lately—pleasantly warm as in summer, yet accompanied by the mild autumn sun that doesn’t burn. Perfect beach days. If you have children, it really is the perfect moment to go directly to the seaside.

The playground at the very end of North Road? That’s North Road Reserve Playground. Honestly, I think it is among the best seaside spots around Melbourne suitable for families. Everything is included—beautiful ocean scenery, a great spot for brunch, plus a playground where children can freely play with sand and water.

If the weather is nice, gather a few friends and begin with brunch at North Point Cafe. The playground is just next door, so you can comfortably sit with a cup of coffee and watch your children play. There’s a big sand area, water installations, a shaded sandpit, swings, including a small trampoline. The area isn’t very big, but that makes things easier to handle.

The key feature is this sizable timber boat exactly at the center. Older children enjoy climbing all over it, but it’s somewhat tricky for the younger toddlers to climb up by themselves. A distinct dry sandpit is available in the shade for young children, and restrooms close at hand (however, no BBQ facilities, just so you know). The ground is soft and made for barefoot running without worrying about bumps or falls. Oh, and there’s a seesaw that, when you bounce, sends a little spray of water—keeps the surprises coming.

This setup seems somewhat distinctive, with a bike path passing close, allowing older children to bring their bikes or scooters. The urban skyline lies far away, and a quick walk from here, there’s the beach itself—perfect for a quick swim or some fun in the sand by the shore.

Visitors carry rugs and arrange picnics upon the grass beside the playground, and there is a small lawn and the much-needed cafe only a few steps away.

If you haven’t taken your kids here yet, you’re missing out—especially if you live in Melbourne’s southeast. You get uninterrupted views across Port Phillip Bay, with the city skyline standing out across the water. At sunset, the sky glows orange, so every photo practically begs to be printed as a postcard.

Facilities are well-built: the primary sandpit features a hand pump water station, small trampolines, a basket swing, a spinning apparatus, everything included. The cycling trail by the waterfront is an added perk for elder brothers and sisters who may wish to ride back and forth.

For parents, it’s easy living—you can grab coffee or a quick snack and not lose sight of your kids. Everyone’s happy.

One tip: bring a change of clothes and a towel because kids always get soaked in the water area. Don’t forget sunblock, hats, and a bit of insect spray—mosquitoes show up as the sun goes down and there’s not much shade along the water.

The sweet spot for visits is after 3pm. Let the kids play, then stick around for the sunset—it’s magic every time.

Parking? Technically, it’s available but pricey. You’re better off finding a spot in the residential streets nearby and strolling over with the family. Stroller recommended, if you’ve got little ones.
