Things you need to know about Kodomo no Hi

Kodomo no Hi means “Children’s Day” in Japanese and is a national holiday in Japan celebrated on May 5th, the fifth day of the fifth month. This day is set aside to honour children’s individuality and celebrate their happiness. Families traditionally fly carp streamers or koinobori for each child in their household. In Japanese folklore, the carp is a symbol of determination and vigour, swimming upstream against all obstacles. Samurai dolls and helmets are also displayed in homes to inspire strength and courage.

There will be many traditional Japanese activities at the event, such as taiko drumming, making mochi, martial arts performances, dressing up in Japanese kimono for photos, colouring koi fish, a maid cafe, and sister event AnimeGO! exhibition (Oct 29th). In addition, there will be Japanese food such as grilled chicken skewers, tamagoyaki, fried chicken, and handmade accessories!

It’s a great outing for families and also for friends interested in Japan to spend a day. Whether it’s for taking photos or just enjoying Japanese cuisine, it will be a great experience!
