Holland House – Hidden “Dutch House” in Smithfield

Holland House - Hidden "Dutch House" in Smithfield

In the industrial zone of Smithfield, there’s a hidden gem known as Little Holland. Unable to fly to Amsterdam due to the pandemic, stepping inside feels like entering a long-lost Nordic paradise. And it’s just about a 15-minute drive from Sydney Zoo.

Every tiny detail in the store reflects the owner’s love for the Netherlands! Having a place like this, where you can temporarily escape the busy reality and immerse yourself in a playful, dreamy, and relaxing atmosphere, is truly wonderful.

The exterior exudes European vibes, and upon opening the creaking wooden door, it’s like discovering a hidden gem, resembling a street-side mini-market in the Netherlands.

Things you’ll find

The store itself is divided into three parts. Upon entering, you’ll find many Dutch limited edition foods and small commemorative ceramics, all adorned with a bunch of unreadable Dutch text on the packaging, giving it a distinctive touch.

Moving further in, there’s a charmingly decorated tea area in the middle. From deer antler decorations to hanging lamps and a van Nistelrooy jersey on the ceiling, the Dutch atmosphere is strongly present. Especially those carpets pretending to be tablecloths, it’s like a paradise for photo ops!

Proceeding into another section, they sell jerseys, second-hand music, furniture, and of course, the essential traditional Dutch wooden clogs. With winter approaching, buying a warm pair of furry Dutch clogs is not a bad idea!

You won’t have a full meal here, but it’s a perfect place for a laid-back afternoon tea break. If you’ve tried and enjoyed their Dutch cheese sausage or chicken kroket, like we did, you can buy them directly from the food section to take home!

Plan your visit

It may not be worth a special trip, but if you’re in the area for sightseeing or visiting the zoo, you can stop by for lunch or afternoon tea. If you are going on a Saturday, we suggest you go to Fairfield Market first and explore!

The store accepts cards, but the restaurant only accepts cash. There are no ATMs within a 10-mile radius, so be sure to bring cash with you. We took home a bouquet of tulips made of wood that will never wither!
