Best Dahlia Farms to Visit in Australia

Best Dahlia Farms in Australia — Where to Pick Your Own

Looking for dahlia farms to visit in Australia? We’ve been to a few over the past couple of seasons, from the Blue Mountains to regional Victoria to a hidden nursery in Brisbane, and here’s what we found at each one.

Best Dahlia Farms in Australia — Where to Pick Your Own

Bilpin Dahlia Farm, NSW

This one was a genuine surprise. If you’re already heading out to Bilpin, the dahlia farm is about 400 metres further west past the Hillbilly Cider Shed, easy to miss if you’re not looking for it. Entry is $10 per person, and you can also buy a made-up bouquet for $25, or just pay a bit more on top of your entry fee to walk out with one. It’s genuinely lovely for photos even on a rainy day, the colours pop against the grey. They only grow dahlias on this patch of land, and it’s only open from late January through to around May, so it’s worth checking before you drive out. If you’re already heading to Bilpin for fruit picking or a cider, it’s well worth pulling in next door for a look.

Address: 2216 Bells Line of Road, Bilpin NSW.

Country Dahlias, Gellibrand VIC

We did this one as a day trip from Melbourne, kids and dog in tow, on our way through to Geelong after a friend recommended it. It’s about two and a bit hours from Melbourne’s southeast, so plan for a full day out rather than a quick stop. This one isn’t really a pick-your-own farm, it’s more of a display and sales operation, the variety of dahlias on show is honestly incredible, but you can’t cut your own flowers on site, you buy a ready-made bouquet instead. It’s also not open all the time, so definitely check their website before you make the trip out, we’d have been disappointed turning up on the wrong day. We finished the day with dinner in Geelong, made for a really relaxed outing overall.

Address: 15 Old Beech Forest Road, Gellibrand, Victoria 3239.

Laowu Garden, Rochedale QLD

This one’s a bit different, a private nursery rather than a commercial farm, and picking is free. We visited on a beautiful sunny day and were honestly blown away walking in, the dahlias were bigger than my face, layered and full, so pretty it was hard to decide what to actually cut. Laowu and the team there were incredibly welcoming, and we even left with a little pot of purple oxalis as a gift, such a kind touch. Came home in the best mood, it was one of those days where the flowers genuinely made everything feel better.

Bilpin Blossom Farm, NSW

If you’re doing a Blue Mountains day trip over Easter, Bilpin is a great base for it. Start at Bilpin Blossom Farm, it’s not open every weekend but it is open over Easter, and you can pick up figs and strawberries while you’re there. From there, head to Hillbilly Cider, the dahlia farm is right next door and this is exactly the same seasonal one we mentioned above. It’s worth noting things have changed a little since our first visit, you used to be able to walk in and pick your own, but now you choose a ready-made bouquet at the entrance instead, still plenty to choose from though. Bring a camera, it photographs beautifully, you can’t walk into the flower beds anymore but you can get some lovely shots from the edge.

When Is Dahlia Season in Australia?

Based on what we’ve seen across these farms, dahlia season generally runs from late January through to around May, though it varies farm to farm and some, like Country Dahlias, aren’t open every day even within season. Always check the farm’s website or socials before you drive out, especially for the smaller, more seasonal spots.

Looking for more seasonal picking spots, we’ve also written about fig picking near Sydney, strawberry picking in Sydney, apple picking in Bilpin, and The Longan Farm in Narangba.

When is dahlia season in Australia?

Generally late January to May, though exact opening dates vary by farm, so it’s worth checking ahead.

Do I need to book ahead?

Not always required, but several of these farms aren’t open every day, so checking their website or social media before visiting is a good idea either way.

Can you pick your own dahlias at these farms?

It depends on the farm. Bilpin Dahlia Farm and Laowu Garden allow picking (Laowu is free), while Country Dahlias sells ready-made bouquets only rather than allowing cutting on site.
