Fold Hindmarsh Reviews

Fold Hindmarsh Reviews

I haven’t eaten out much in Adelaide for ages, so I was so excited to finally get out and do some food exploring! Fold has been all over Instagram, so I went to see what the hype was about.

It’s a little bakery at Shop 4, 124 Port Road in Hindmarsh, and the pastries are like nothing else around, with Asian-inspired flavours folded into flaky pastry. It started out supplying pastries to Adelaide cafes, and its first shop opened on Valentine’s Day in 2025. I’m a sweet-and-savoury person, so we ordered a mix of both, and here’s everything we ate.

On a weekday morning just after 9, it was quiet and every pastry was still available, and there was 1P and 2P parking right on the street outside, so it was really easy. Another morning around 10, there was already a long queue, so if you’re in a hurry, go earlier, although the queue usually only takes 15 to 20 minutes.

The matcha flan

This was the best one! The matcha is bitter, which balances the sweetness of the flan, so it isn’t sweet at all, which was perfect for the two of us who don’t like sweet things. I took some to share with friends and everyone loved it. It gets the highest rating from me, five stars.

The rockmelon jasmine mochi tart

Another five stars. The chewy mochi on top is so good, and the jasmine fragrance with the sweet rockmelon isn’t cloying at all.

The grape jasmine tart

It’s huge! It’s $12.90, which I think is good value for the size. The pastry was a bit too hard, and it took me a while to cut. The white chocolate ganache was too sweet for me, I think it suits local tastes. My friend had seen it on social media and wanted it most, but eating the whole thing is a bit much. It’s very creative though, with a jelly-like middle and a grape jasmine flavour. When I cut one at home I got a perfect cross-section, so I’d have it with an unsweetened drink, and it’s much less cloying.

The osmanthus jiuniang tart

It’s quite sweet overall, and the flavour of the fermented rice wine is a little covered by the sweetness, so the two flavours feel slightly separate. But the chewy mochi on top is so good that it didn’t spoil it for me.

The nori butter mochi Swiss

This is the long one. It’s a savoury Swiss pastry, a bit like a cheesecake with nori, and the pastry is crisp and fragrant but not dry. In a box full of sweet things, one salty one gives a nice balance. The middle is hollow, so I didn’t taste the mochi, but my friend did, I should have tasted it more carefully! I took some to my friends and they liked it too.

The wasabi beef roll

I added this at the last minute and was shocked when I paid, it was $15.90. The minced beef is so like a dumpling filling, and it’s topped with wasabi mayo. The sauce is cold, so it felt greasy, and a meat filling like that suits being eaten hot, but I didn’t really feel like a hot savoury pastry. This was my least favourite.

The drinks

We just ordered matcha and coffee, which were ordinary, and next time I want to try their specialty drinks. Drinks have prices on the menu, but the pastries don’t have price tags in the shop, so ask before you order.

Where it is and when it’s open

Fold is at Shop 4, 124 Port Road, Hindmarsh SA 5007. Their website lists it open Tuesday to Friday 8am to 1pm and Saturday 9:30am to 1pm, closed Sunday and Monday, and Instagram says they close when they sell out. The pastry flavours change regularly, so what’s on may be different from what I had.

Is it worth it

Yes! Order the matcha flan and the rockmelon jasmine mochi tart, and share the grape jasmine tart, it’s big. Go early, and ask the price of the pastries when you order.
