We weren’t in the market for novelty biscuits. It was just a school-holiday errand run through Eastwood Woolworths, milk and bread and whatever else was on the list, and I only stopped because a stack of purple packets in the snack aisle didn’t look like anything I’d seen there before. Oreo doesn’t do purple. Or it didn’t, until this one.
Why This Cookie, Of All Things
The packet said OREO x BTS, brown sugar pancake flavour, and it turns out there’s a real collaboration behind it rather than just a name slapped on the box. The flavour is built around hotteok, the Korean street-food pancake filled with melted brown sugar, and the wafer itself is the first purple cookie Oreo has ever made. It’s part of a genuinely global push too, Mondelez has rolled the range out across more than 80 markets, timed to the band’s thirteenth anniversary, which is also why there are 13 different embossed designs floating around internationally. Ours were a mix of two or three patterns, not the full set, so don’t go in expecting to collect all of them from one box.
The Half-Price Sticker Did It
There was a markdown on the shelf and a staff member handing out free samples a few steps away, which between the two of them made the decision for me. I tried a piece off the sample tray, decided it was worth $1.60, and grabbed a pack.
What Ten Sweet Bites Actually Taste Like
I expected something closer to a regular Oreo with a different filling colour, and got something noticeably sweeter instead. The brown sugar comes through first, warm and a bit caramel-like, and there’s a thin thread of cinnamon running underneath it that keeps it from tasting flat. It sits closer to a Tim Tam on the sweetness scale than a standard Oreo. I ate one and felt done. My kids went back for thirds without any hesitation, which tells you roughly who this cookie was made for.
Good to Know Before You Go
- Where we found it: Eastwood Woolworths, snack aisle, near the regular Oreo range
- Price: Full price sits with other specialty Oreo lines; ours was marked half price at $1.60
- Flavour: Brown sugar pancake with a mild cinnamon note, sweeter than a regular Oreo
- Stock: Limited edition, and it looked like it had been moving fast, so grab it if you spot it rather than planning to come back
- Designs: Multiple embossed patterns per box, but no guarantee of a full set in one purchase
If your kids are into BTS or just like collecting things, it’s worth turning the different cookie patterns into a five-minute scavenger hunt on the drive home, which is exactly what ours did. It’s also an easy one to slot into a bigger day out rather than a special trip on its own, pair it with something off our things to do with kids list, or check the current school holiday dates for your state so you know how many days you’ve still got to fill.
Was It Worth the Detour?
For $1.60 and a free sample, easily. It’s not going to replace a regular Oreo in the pantry, and it’s sweet enough that I wouldn’t want more than one at a time, but as a bit of limited-edition fun to hand the kids on a holiday errand run, it did exactly what it needed to. If you spot the purple packet at your own Woolworths, it’s worth grabbing before it’s gone, these limited runs tend not to hang around.
