If you’re looking for a gathering spot with great atmosphere, food, creativity, and value for money, nothing beats Hello Auntie. Three people ate until we were absolutely stuffed, and it only came to about $45 per person.
Every year truffle season I always look forward to this place. Hello Auntie Marrickville is that kind of place, you know it will not let you down, so every year you must go on a pilgrimage there. Today morning I scrolled and saw them post that truffle season first day, and I directly put down whatever I had on hand and just went!
Arrived just in time, there was one seat left. Just one. I directly sat down and ordered the whole menu already!
Worth mentioning is that parking isn’t too hard to find. There’s a public car park directly opposite, and there is also street parking available a few blocks further in. It was quite quiet on a weekday, so if you’re planning to go on a weekend, it might be a good idea to make a reservation.
We’d been to their city location before and really liked it. Overall, it’s great value for money and perfect for group gatherings. This time, when we visited Marrickville, we found out that this is actually their original store. The overall décor and atmosphere feel even more suited for a date night. And best of all, there’s no weekend surcharge!
Hello Auntie Marrickville Reviews
First came up the prawn cracker. I thought it was an appetiser, just to open up the appetite, but the first bite and I was already in love with it. The outer skin was that crispy, and then inside was truffle century egg salsa sauce, and there was still fresh truffle — that kind of fermented fragrance is just hard to describe! You eat it and you will just freeze for a moment, then lower your head and look at the plate again!
One of the most impressive dishes was the Vietnamese pancake. When it arrived, it was served on a special stand, with a large golden pancake carrying a fragrant coconut aroma. The staff were incredibly nice, explaining how to eat it and even helping us cut it up with scissors. They recommended wrapping it in lettuce before eating, and honestly, it felt a bit like having Korean BBQ. I ended up eating more than half of it by myself!
Truffle beef rice noodle — I order this every year. Thin slice wagyu plus wood ear mushroom plus truffle garlic sauce, the soup base is their house signature. With truffle you can really just add five grams, don’t hesitate to add it — after that the whole bowl is on a completely different level. I’m just that kind of person who will drink the soup finish!
This year the noodle type was a bit hard to choose, really each one had its own good.
Truffle miso sauce thick rice noodle with lap cheong, coriander, parmesan cheese, and fresh truffle. This kind of east-west fusion, many places make it and it comes out all weird, but their place makes it just right. That fragrance — on a big cold day, eating this made me feel so satisfied!
Duck meat noodle — hearing the name I thought it was that kind of ordinary braised duck, but it turned out to be doubanjiang chili sichuan pepper style flavour. First bite down I was just thinking, can I buy this sauce? Can I bring it home? This bowl today I’m giving it first place above the lamb tossed noodle I had last time — even richer and heavier flavour, and I was still scraping the sauce at the end.
Vietnamese style red braised pork belly wrapped in breadcrumb and fried, matched with runny yolk egg and lemongrass ginger caramel sauce. It looks and feels like just an ordinary side dish, but eating it is that kind of thing where you cannot say exactly where it’s special, but you just keep eating and cannot stop!
Stockyard grain fed two hundred day beef charcoal grill — the quality really has nothing to say. I added extra truffle by the way!
There was also one dish that was a staff recommendation, not on the menu — it was a truffle sponge cake inspired by milk cake, with truffle milk and truffle cream cheese!
I have been a fan of the chef for a very long time. Every time I come it is that kind of feeling like, oh right, this is it, this is the flavour — you really cannot eat this anywhere else!
