Hamilton Gardens – A Must-Visit Garden in Hamilton

Hamilton Gardens New Zealand

Hamilton Gardens may not be the main attraction for tourists, but if you happen to pass by, be sure to make a stop at Hamilton Gardens!

The garden was established in 1971, originally as a rubbish dump. With the help of international friends and in collaboration with companies and the government, it took several decades to create more than twenty gardens, each representing the characteristics of different countries and eras. They continue to update and create new gardens, so every visit offers a new experience.

Open daily from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with the last entry at 4:30 PM. For just $20, you can join a guided tour that explains the stories behind each garden, and there are gardens worth seeing in every season.

Hamilton Gardens – Things You Don’t Want to Miss

Below are a few noteworthy gardens. Take notes, and don’t miss them!

  • The serene Chinese Scholar’s Garden, designed in collaboration with Hamilton’s sister city, Wuxi, features lush greenery and arched gateways that resemble Suzhou gardens.
  • The Italian Renaissance Garden, which I visited at the end of March, was covered in red leaves.
  • The well-organised British Tudor-style garden exudes a royal charm.
  • The Surrealist Garden, with its giant green plant sculptures, feels like a journey through Alice in Wonderland.
  • The Picturesque Garden draws inspiration from Mozart’s “The Magic Flute,” telling the story of a hero’s journey through trials towards enlightenment and love.
  • The traditional Maori garden with unique architecture and totems is a must-visit to learn about Maori culture when in New Zealand.

Whether you’re interested in gardens or just want to relax in a beautiful environment, this garden will provide you with a great experience.
