Exploring the Jenolan Cave in Blue Mountains

blue mountains jenolan caves

Jenolan Caves is located in Kanangra-Boyd National Park, past the Blue Mountains. It is one of the parts of the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage. Jenolan Caves is famous because it is one of the largest and oldest cave systems discovered in Australia and the world, with a history of 340 million years and up to 11 caves on the ground and underground.

It takes about 3 hours to drive from Sydney, and the maps and signs at the local tourist centre can be confusing. So make sure you at least remember these few landmark names which will help you to find your way easier!

The Grant Arch

It is a necessary checkpoint to enter the Jenolan-karst reserve and is a natural tunnel-like cave.

Jenolan village

After passing through the cave, you will see this fairytale-like small town. The tickets for cave visits are available at the tourist service centre in the town, and it is best to buy them on the official website. The ticket price per person is $55, and there is a tour guide if you are interested.

The most famous caves are Lucas Cave, Chifley Cave, and River Cave, which take a long time and have a high level of difficulty due to the large fluctuations in elevation and steep staircases.

Blue Lake

In addition to the caves, the nearby Blue Lake is a must-visit. It is located at the exit of Lucas Cave and to the left of The Grant Arch entrance.

Carlotta Arch

It looks like a natural limestone arch bridge in the sky, and you can see distant mountains and winding roads through the arch bridge. It is very spectacular!

Six Foot Track

You can see a heart-shaped sky hole.

Kanangra Walls lookout

Drive half an hour from the town to overlook the Blue Mountains scenery.

Hassans Wall Lookout

On the way back, it is recommended to visit this lookout point in Lithgow, the view is stunning!

For accommodation, you can stay in the town or in nearby Airbnb rentals.
