Wave Rock in Perth – A Must-Visit in Western Australia

wave rock in perth

Wave Rock is located in Hyden, which is actually just one of the many rocks in the area. Its unique shape has made it the most representative rock in the region. About 60 million years ago, water from Hyden Rock seeped into the cracks on the surface of the rock and slowly eroded the structure of the granite, forming the present-day striped pattern that is common in wave rocks like this one. This particular wave rock is the largest, measuring 100 meters long and 15 meters high.

The Best Way to Explore Wave Rock

Hiking Trails

  1. Wave Rock Walk: From the parking lot to Wave Rock, it is 325 meters one-way and 650 meters round-trip. From here, you can also walk to Hippo’s Yawn Loop (1.4KM), Breakers Trail, and Hyden Rock Circuit.
  2. Hyden Rock Walk: From Wave Rock, continue up the stairs to the top of the rock. The short trail is 860 meters long, while the long trail is 1300 meters long. Lizards can be seen on the top.
  3. Breakers Trail: The entire trail is relatively flat, 675 meters one-way, and 1350 meters round-trip.
  4. The Hippo’s Yawn Loop: Walk along the main road to the rock and turn left. It is relatively flat, 1030 meters to Yawn and 680 meters back to the parking lot.
  5. Wave Rock Walk Circuit: Start at Hippo’s Yawn, then continue north to Hyden Rock before returning to the parking lot via the café. The entire trail is 3600 meters and relatively flat.

Tour groups generally take the first short hiking route, but the scenery is also great from the top of the wave rock.

Best Photo Spot

We went there at noon when the light was perpendicular, making it easy to capture the entire rock. There will be shadows in the afternoon, but it is beautiful during sunset, and you can also take pictures of the starry sky at night.

How to Get to the Wave Rock

It is more than a four-hour drive from Perth, but you can also take the Transwa from Perth to Hyden. The bus departs on Tuesdays and returns on Thursdays. The fee is AU$12 for a car and AU$7 for a motorcycle, which can be paid at the self-service ticket machine. Then, place the printed ticket on the dashboard.

Places to Stay near the Wave Rock

Accommodation: There are two hotels nearby, Wave Rock Motel and Wave Rock Resort. You can also try camping at Wave Rock Camping and Caravan Park (which also provides parking for RVs).

Attractions Nearby

In addition to Wave Rock, you can also experience the Floating Salt Pool, a natural saltwater lake similar to the Dead Sea that allows people to float on the surface. It is said to be great for skin maintenance. After reaching the top of Wave Rock, continue walking along the mountain top to the other side of the rock, and you will see the natural pits and pools that resemble an alien planet. There is also a Salt Lake Lookout nearby.
