Strawberry season November to April you can go now. The Beerenberg Farm is in Hahndorf, about a 30 minute drive from the city. You’ll go through a bit of highway but there’s no difficult mountain roads, the drive is actually very comfortable. If you don’t sleep in on weekends, go early since they open at 9:00.
The farm has its own cafe, you can sit down and order and the food comes out quite fast, no long waiting. After eating, go picking and the crowd is just right, you’ll get the morning strawberries, super bright, super sweet and very juicy. Honestly we are not a fan of supermarket ones, but I’ve given them too many chances already, maybe I just don’t like those small sour strawberries, if I want strawberries now I’d rather come to the farm.
Strawberry picking in Hahndorf
Entry is $5 per person, you pay at the shop in the main building, they’ll put a wristband on you and give you a box. Picking doesn’t take long, one box fills up very quickly, around 2 to 3 kg which is about $10+. Including photos but not counting food, we stayed at the farm for around 30 minutes. Cloudy weather is actually perfect, the sun comes and goes so it’s not too harsh, but still enough light to take nice photos.
Breakfast menu ends at 11:30, I ordered the Country Breakfast Stack which really suits my taste, first impression is like a farm version of egg benedict, bacon, bread, cheese sauce and house-made onion relish, very flavourful. My friend got the granola, with lots of big strawberries, mixed berries, greek yogurt and honey, he really liked it. If you miss breakfast, there are still classics and salad bowls until 3:30, quite a lot of options.
Before you go, check Beerenberg Farm online or Facebook to confirm if they are open, sometimes they close if the weather is bad or if everything has been picked out. Drink water and wear sunscreen, and after the farm you can also walk around the main street in Hahndorf, there are lots of small shops nearby and everything is close, a very easy half day plan.
