Never thought that just 30 minutes from Melbourne, you could walk into a place that feels straight out of a fairytale medieval art village.
Montsalvat is Australia’s oldest artist community, founded in 1934 by artist Justus Jorgensen. Stone walls, towers, mud brick cottages — every corner feels like part of a dream built by hand.
Walking through the vine-covered archways and cobblestone paths feels like stepping into an art film with no ending. It is not just a photo spot, but a living artistic space full of history and atmosphere.
What to See at Montsalvat Castle
Inside the estate there are castle buildings, underground cellar spaces to explore, galleries filled with artwork, and even white peacocks and huge white geese walking around the grounds. One of the castle buildings even has a strong Greek Mediterranean feeling, almost like suddenly being transported somewhere in Europe.
At first, standing outside the entrance, it honestly did not seem that impressive. But after walking in, we ended up spending two full hours there and only left because the place was closing.
Montsalvat Church and Art Galleries
The old church inside the grounds feels especially unique. There are murals inspired by paintings from one of Spain’s oldest churches, recreated inside this small Australian chapel, making the whole place feel layered with history and artistic atmosphere.
There are also seasonal exhibitions and small art shows throughout the estate. Combined with the quiet music playing around the galleries, the whole experience feels calm and immersive.
Best Photo Spots at Montsalvat
The swimming pool area is another iconic spot. In spring, the purple wisteria around the pool becomes one of the most photographed areas. The church windows are also beautiful for photos.
This time visiting again years later felt completely different — less about taking photos, more about slowing down and enjoying the atmosphere. Standing outside the church listening to the birds, water sounds, and watching people walk through the gardens felt incredibly relaxing.
Montsalvat Cafe and Nearby Day Trip Ideas
The café near the entrance is also a nice stop for brunch or coffee before exploring the castle grounds. Many people spend half a day here slowly walking through the gardens and galleries.
If you still have time afterwards, nearby Waterfolds Park is also worth visiting. There is a five-kilometre trail, open grasslands, rivers, sunset views, kangaroos, BBQ areas, and a children’s playground, making it a perfect Melbourne day trip.
