Maple Grove Playground, Pakenham East: A New One-Hectare Park Worth the Drive
We’d seen a few photos of Maple Grove Playground pop up in a local parents’ group before we’d even worked out where Pakenham East was on the map. A full hectare of playground sounded like one of those things that gets exaggerated in the retelling, so we put it on the list and went to see for ourselves on a quiet weekday morning.
It wasn’t exaggerated. It’s big.
What’s Actually There
Maple Grove sits on Annual Avenue in the new Pakenham East estate, a few kilometres from the older, established part of Pakenham. It’s part of Maple Grove, a fast-growing residential development, and it’s the kind of “destination playground” that’s clearly been built to give a brand-new suburb somewhere to gather, not just somewhere for toddlers to swing for ten minutes.
The design brief was apparently the classic Aussie backyard, and you can see it once you know to look for it. There’s a towering cubby house with its own lookout tower, a helicopter-themed play structure that had our kids climbing before we’d even parked the car properly, a flying fox, a set of billy carts, and enough climbing nets and slides to fill a solid hour before anyone asks for a snack. There’s a nature play section tucked to one side for the kids who’d rather dig and balance than queue for the slide, a loop path that’s flat and wide enough for scooters (bring them, genuinely), a big open lawn for a ball or a picnic rug, and a half basketball court if the older kids get bored of the playground itself.
The park was designed by Agency of Sculpture, the same studio behind the well-known Dragon Park in Officer’s Arcadia estate, and it shows. There’s more imagination in the small details here than in a standard council playground — the sort of thing you notice on your second or third visit rather than your first.
Good to Know Before You Head Out
A few practical things worth knowing before you load the car:
There’s no confirmed public toilet on site at the time of writing, and no BBQ facilities either. If you’re planning a longer visit, it’s worth sorting out a toilet stop on the way, or checking Cardinia Shire’s website closer to your visit in case that’s changed since this park is still brand new.
There’s a good amount of shaded seating around the edges and a drinking fountain, so it’s not a bare paddock — just don’t expect a full amenities block yet.
If you’re coming by train, the new East Pakenham Station is only around 550 metres away, which makes a train-plus-playground morning a genuinely easy option if you live along that line.
The Opening Celebration
We’d heard whispers of a free opening celebration planned for Sunday 20 September 2026, from 12pm to 3pm — but the playground itself has already been open and in use for a while now, so you don’t need to wait for an event to go and play. If you’re planning around the celebration specifically, it’s worth double-checking the date on Maple Grove’s own social pages closer to the day, since community event details do sometimes shift.
What to Pack
Nothing complicated. A picnic rug, lunch, plenty of water, and scooters if your kids are into them — the loop path is made for it. If you’re going in term time, it also happens to line up nicely with the VIC school holidays and term dates for 2026, so it’s worth checking those before you plan a bigger day trip out that way.
Is It Worth the Drive?
If you’re already in Pakenham, Officer or Berwick, this one’s an easy yes — it’s free, it’s enormous by playground standards, and there’s genuinely enough there to fill half a day without anyone getting bored. If you’re coming from further into Melbourne, it’s a bit more of a commitment, but it pairs well with a stop at Dragon Park in Officer if you want to compare the two designs from the same studio in one outing.
We’ve added it to our running list of free playgrounds worth visiting around Melbourne, alongside spots like Chowder Bay Playground in Mosman and Roma Street Parkland for those days when you want somewhere new that isn’t going to cost anything. For more ideas closer to home, our things to do with kids directory is a good place to start.
