Western Australia is home to many stunning salt lakes, and the closest and most famous one to Perth is Hutt Lagoon, also known as the Pink Lake!
Hutt Lagoon is located on the central coast of Western Australia (approximately 533 kilometres away from Perth). It is one of the three pink lakes in Western Australia and a rare and magnificent lake along the Australian coastline. It is also the largest pink lake in Australia!
What is the best time for Hutt Lagoon
The pinkest season of the pink lake is from July to October, while the period from December to March is the dry season when the lake’s appearance is not as impressive.
Many say that the pink lake looks its pinkest and most beautiful around 3:00 PM in the afternoon (you can go between 10am to 3pm). So, you can visit the Pinnacles during the day and then drive to the pink lake in the afternoon. In between, you can take a short break in the charming town of Kalbarri. The town is beautiful, and many people choose to stay there overnight!
Where is Hutt Lagoon
Hutt Lagoon is located in the mid-western region of Western Australia, along the coast of the Indian Ocean, approximately 50 kilometres south of the town of Kalbarri, which serves as the gateway to Kalbarri National Park.
The nearest town to Hutt Lagoon is Gregory, situated between the ocean and the southern shore of the lagoon. Gregory is known for fishing and agriculture, and it has a small permanent population of around 50 people. The town has a hotel available for accommodation.
Getting to Hutt Lagoon
It’s approximately a five-hour drive from Perth CBD. While some people choose to drive directly to Pink Lake in a day, we find the journey of over five hours a bit tiring. Therefore, you might want to plan for a two-day trip to make it more comfortable.
You can also see the pink lake by plane. Departing from Geraldton Airport, the plane will fly north along the coastline, offering amazing views of Geraldton city. After approximately 15 to 30 minutes of flight, you will arrive over the Pink Lake! Along the way to the Pink Lake, you will enjoy a scenic coastal view. It is definitely worth the ride.
Is Hutt Lagoon safe to swim?
The deepest part of the lake is only 0.65 meters deep, so technically there are no restrictions on swimming. However, it is important to note that the water is extremely salty!
