If you really want to have close contact with animals, visiting a farm is a great choice, and the admission price is much cheaper than a zoo! For parents in Melbourne, this is a must-visit destination when taking the kids out, and even adults can enjoy the experience too!

Best Animal Farms in Melbourne

Funky Farm – Hastings

Funky Farm is a relatively small farm where guided tours are offered throughout the day. During the tour, visitors can get up close and personal with many small animals including koalas, sugar gliders, lizards, snakes, kangaroos, and more. You can touch and interact with all of the animals except for the koalas. Our favourite animals were the kangaroos and sugar gliders. The kangaroos were gentle and round, and even stood up to ask for pets. The sugar gliders were incredibly cute, nibbling on corn with their little mouths like little pigs. Braver visitors can even touch the snakes and lizards as their skin feels similar to each other.

The whole tour takes less than one and a half hours, and after the tour, you can plan to explore other places in Mornington.

209 Coolart Road, Hastings.

Wild about Wellbeing – Wandin North

This farm seems to be newly opened and there’s still a lot of construction going on. There are several options available including a tractor ride, pony ride (for children aged 4 and above), and an egg hunt (limited to Easter).

We tried the tractor ride and the egg hunt today. Overall, it was a good experience, and it would have been even better if the weather was nicer. There was a big truck on site that served as a stage, and people were singing and interacting with children, which was quite fun. If the weather is good, the view is even better. The terrain is elevated, and the scenery is great. You can also bring food for a picnic if the weather is good.

The tractor ride takes about an hour and goes to a small house where there are many small animals including baby chicks and ducks, rabbits, and piglets. Outside, there are flocks of sheep, chickens, and two donkeys.

Wild About Wellbeing, 38-40 Hunter Rd, Wandin North VIC 3139

The farm is open from Thursday to Sunday. Be sure to check the opening hours before you go.

Big Goose Farm – Moorooduc

The biggest farm we have ever visited, with many different areas. You should go early to make the most of your day.

Tickets are sold at the entrance, and you can also buy food to feed the animals for $5 a bag. Be careful of the large goats though, they can be quite strong and might take the bag from you, including the paper bag!

There are many alpacas in one area that you can get up close and personal with, and there are also fenced areas with sheep, goats, and cows, among other animals such as kangaroos, emus, dingos, and wallabies.

There’s a free tractor ride you can take, as well as a fun playground and mini golf course, where you’ll need to purchase your own golf ball. The farm also has many geese, as well as adorable lambs that are just too cute.

233 Mornington-Tyabb Rd, Moorooduc VIC 3933

Chesterfield Farm – Scoresby

It’s not far from the city and it’s just about 20 minutes by car. The farm is quite large! There are also quite a lot of animals! You can bring some food and have a picnic on the farm. There are also pavilions to rest in.

Our favourite is the deer! It’s so beautiful! It should be the animal with the most numbers on the farm! Then there are also camels which are also suitable for taking beautiful photos. There are also some kangaroos, which may depend on your luck. Sometimes you only see a few, and sometimes you see a group resting somewhere.

The small animal area is interactive, but you can’t feed them.

Ticket purchase: buy tickets in advance on the official website

Ticket prices: children under 3 years old are free; 3-17 years old is $13; adult ticket price is $20

1221 Ferntree Gully Rd, Scoresby VIC 3179

Myuna Farm – Doveton

It’s quite different from a zoo as you can get up close and personal with all the animals except for the pigs. For example, you can feed the goats and deer and watch them come running to the fence for a treat. The little lamb is even more excited and eager to eat, nuzzling and nudging each other.

The admission fee is very cheap (9 dollars per person) and includes a bag of feed. However, it’s important to bring sunscreen as there are few shady spots to take cover while visiting the animals. There’s a cafe at the entrance as well.

The animals here are very smart. While the deer will politely eat the feed from your hand, the others will take advantage of your momentary distraction to snatch the bag right out of your hand.

182 Kidds Rd, Doveton VIC 3177

Edendale Farm – Eltham

At the entrance of the farm, there was food for feeding the chickens in a box, but by the time we arrived, it had all been taken. Although it was free, there was a gold coin donation at the entrance, and now they only accept payments by card, which is a way of supporting the farm.

Inside, it was not small and there were alpacas, goats, chickens, ducks, horses, cows, and Dutch pigs. Although there weren’t many types of animals, there were enough to keep the kids entertained for a long time.

30 Gastons Rd, Eltham VIC 3095

Omaru Alpaca Farm – Cottles Bridge

This is a farm that sells alpacas. On the first and fourth Sundays of each month, they have an open day where you can feed the alpacas unlimitedly, take them for a walk, and have a picnic with them.

The ticket price is very reasonable, and it’s worth it to have a picnic in the company of the little alpacas. There is only a basic self-service coffee machine and hot chocolate (like those at 7-11), but no food, so be sure to bring your own.

You can see the alpaca babies from March to May each year. They are super adorable and cute, and they eat grass that smells especially fragrant.

190 Hildebrand Rd, Cottles Bridge VIC 3099

Collingwood Children’s Farm – Abbotsford

The scenery is beautiful. The small animals are well-fed and clean, and there’s no bad smell. Even the pigsty is clean, and the two grey pigs are the cleanest we’ve seen in Melbourne. There are various performance activities. You can touch the guinea pig and help brush the cow’s hair, and the cow is so clean and cute!

It’s best to wear rain boots for your baby as it can be muddy during the rainy season. There are also cute little sheep and they’re super cute and even come over to eat the grass you feed them. The little horses are also adorable, and these two places are adjacent to each other.

18 St Heliers St, Abbotsford VIC 3067

Bundoora Park Farm – Bundoora

The Bundoora Park Farm was larger than we expected and had many animals. We didn’t have high expectations since it’s a park, but it was really nice inside. When we walked in, we saw kangaroos and emus, and there were also donkeys, ponies, cows, goats, sheep, llamas, roosters, parrots, rabbits, guinea pigs, and more!

The best part was that the food for feeding the sheep was unlimited, so kids could feed them to their heart’s content! The feeding troughs for the cows and sheep were also located near the fence, so children could see them eating up close!

There were also two playground areas and a garden. Overall, it was a great experience and we had a lot of fun playing there!

1069 Plenty Rd, Bundoora VIC 3083

Animal Land – Diggers Rest

Animal Land Children’s Farm is located in Diggers Rest. It’s very large and has a variety of poultry and livestock, as well as several small playgrounds for kids to play in. Our baby’s favourite activities were riding the ponies, and petting the rabbits and guinea pigs.

On weekends, the café here also serves BBQ for visitors to purchase and enjoy. Parents who want to host a birthday party for their children can check the official website for information, as there are various packages available to choose from.

200 Duncans Ln, Diggers Rest VIC 3427

Caldermeade Farm – Caldermeade

Caldermeade Farm is located on the South Gippsland Highway, which is also the main road to Phillip Island, making it a perfect rest stop. The farm has a café that serves coffee made with fresh milk from the farm, which is smooth and rich.

The farm has everything from sheep to cows, and they even provide free animal feed for visitors. You don’t have to wait in line, which is great for those of us who don’t like crowds. It’s a lot of fun!

4385 South Gippsland Highway, Caldermeade VIC 3984

Rain Hayne & Shine – Balnarring

There are various cute animals that you can cuddle and take photos with up close. When you hold the purchased feed, the animals will run around you, such as sheep.

490 Stumpy Gully Rd, Balnarring VIC 3926

Ticket price: Adults – $15, Children – $10, Family (4 people) – $45
