Found out about this one through the local mum groups, it’s new, it’s only been open since April, and it’s already fully booked out most days! Had to see what the fuss was about.
Most play cafes around Adelaide are built for burning energy, ball pits, slides, that sort of thing. This one’s built around imaginative, role play instead.
There are 11 different themed zones kids can wander between, each one set up like a real little space, a construction corner, a dress-up studio, a pretend animal rescue, a hospital, a market, even a post office. Every corner’s clearly had a lot of thought put into it, you can tell the owners didn’t just buy a pile of generic toys and call it done.
Why it’s actually relaxing for parents
Anyone who’s done the rounds of other play cafes knows how tiring it actually is, climbing up after your toddler, watching for bigger kids barrelling through, hovering the whole time ready to catch a fall.
This place is properly calm by comparison. Because the sessions are capped and it’s aimed at preschool-age kids specifically, you can actually sit down with a coffee and just watch them explore instead of trailing behind them the whole time.
There’s a white picket fence separating the café area from the play space, open enough that you can still see everything, but it gives you permission to actually sit.
The café side
There’s a proper menu too, not just reheated kids’ snacks, simple sandwiches and toasties, bagels, waffles, picky plates, yoghurt bowls, plus cakes and cookies if you want something with your coffee.
Good to know before you go
Nearly every session is fully booked these days, so book through their website ahead of time, don’t just turn up expecting to walk in. It’s designed for ages 0 to 7, and it’s also set up to be disability-inclusive, so it’s worth knowing if you’ve got a child with additional needs. They also run private hire for birthday parties if you want the whole space to yourselves.

Is The Little Southern Village worth visiting
Yes, especially if you’ve got a preschooler and you’re tired of the usual run-around play cafes. It’s at Shop 19, 93 Main South Road, O’Halloran Hill, inside the Hilltop Shopping Centre, and it opened on 7 April this year, the first location of a new local brand called The Little Village Collective. Owners Kelly and Craig came up with the idea after visiting a play café in the UK and wanting something similar back home. Sessions run three times a day, each one 1 hour 45 minutes, and bookings are capped, so it never feels crowded.
Going in the school holidays
A calmer alternative if the usual indoor play centres feel too chaotic over the break. The SA spring school holidays run 26 September to 11 October this year, and with sessions capped, it’s worth booking the moment you know which day you’re free. For more indoor options have a look through our indoor play centre and things to do with kids lists.
