Yan Yean Reservoir Park Victoria

Recently the weather finally cleared up, so we went to Yan Yean Reservoir Park on the weekend. Yan Yean Reservoir Park Victoria is less than an hour from the city. We didn’t have very high expectations at first, but we were pleasantly surprised when we arrived.

Yan Yean Reservoir Park Victoria

A huge grassy slope stretches out in front of you, looking just like a computer desktop wallpaper. Below is the reservoir, and in the distance are mountains and the sky. Photos really can’t capture the sense of openness you feel there.

We sat on the grass overlooking the lake and zoned out for a while. The breeze felt amazing, and it seemed like time slowed down.

You can have a picnic on the grass, use the BBQ facilities, bring your dog for a walk, and there is a small playground nearby where kids can play. So if you’re visiting with children, it’s a great spot too.

Melbourne winters aren’t actually that cold, and the scenery is still beautiful. There are also fewer bugs than in summer. You don’t need to travel far to discover views like this. I think that’s one of the reasons we like living here.

The history

This is a historic reservoir in Melbourne’s north, built in the mid-19th century. It supplied drinking water to the city during the Victorian gold rush era and has witnessed much of Melbourne’s development. The reservoir area is known for its expansive lake, large grassy areas, and the rolling hills on the southern edge of the Great Dividing Range, creating a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere.

Yan Yean Reservoir Park Walk

We started by walking along the lakeside trail. The water was calm and elegant, sparkling in the sunlight. Countless ducks drifted across the lake, while the silhouette of the Great Dividing Range appeared faintly in the distance, naturally encouraging us to slow down and enjoy the moment.

The facilities here are also very thoughtful, with electric BBQs and sheltered picnic areas. Having a barbecue while looking out over the lake, with the breeze and water views around you, makes everything feel extra relaxing.

Along the way we spotted hopping kangaroos, noisy sulphur-crested cockatoos, and agile wild rabbits darting through the landscape. They added a lively touch to the peaceful lakeside setting.

Yan Yean Reservoir is truly an understated but comfortable place to unwind. After finishing the walk, of course we couldn’t miss the chance to enjoy a good meal and replace all the calories we had burned.
