Finding the Mornington Peninsula’s Iconic Vanilla Slices

Finding the Mornington Peninsula's Iconic Vanilla Slices

A friend once recommended this place (The Vanilla Slice Cafe Sorrento) saying it’s one of the best, I was a bit skeptical at first, but it’s actually pretty good. This place is pretty much a must-visit in Sorrento, and often ranked among the best vanilla slices around Melbourne. Even people who don’t usually like desserts would probably enjoy this.

Vanilla Slice is their signature, so it’s always well stocked. basically every table orders one. It’s kind of like an Australian-style mille-feuille with less layers, with custard between two layers of pastry and icing sugar on top.

It looks very heavy, but the taste is surprisingly light. It’s suitable if you don’t like overly sweet desserts. The pastry isn’t super crispy, but the custard is just the right sweetness, chilled and not heavy at all. Perfect to share.

The slice itself is quite big (around $10), almost too much for two people to finish. Pairs really well with a black coffee.

We also ordered fish and chips here, the fish was okay, but the salad was surprisingly fresh.

If you want to come, it’s best to come in the morning as it can get really busy after midday.

We actually planned this as part of a road trip, wanted somewhere with both mountains and ocean within a short drive, so ended up choosing Sorrento.

After finishing your Vanilla Slice, you can head to Portsea or Mornington Peninsula National Park for a walk.
