If you’re near Dubbo, be sure to visit Wellington Caves! The entire cave exploration is guided by staff (all difficulty levels accepted). We’ll walk through the garden path all the way down to the underground.
There’s also an animal exhibition area in the cafe and an outdoor garden with a children’s playground.
Our experience
On the last day of our trip in Dubbo, we made a detour to Wellington Caves on the way back. We caught the last tour of the day at Cathedral Cave, and it was incredibly beautiful and spectacular. The crystals, faintly shimmering in the light, have endured the passage of time, adding a magical touch of time travel to this journey!
Descending into the underground cave for the first time, we initially thought it would be cold inside, but to my surprise, it wasn’t. The guide explained that the temperature inside the cave remains constant throughout the year, providing a comfortable coolness in summer and just enough warmth in winter. The temperature inside is maintained at around 15 degrees Celsius.
Throughout the tour, the guide explained how crystals and stalactites are formed, and more.
On the cave walls, we spotted many ancient animal fossils, a testament to the changes the world has undergone over time. The guide had an incredibly rich knowledge base and shared a wealth of information at each stop. Feel free to ask questions, as they are more than happy to provide answers!
As the journey neared its end, the intern guide performed a rendition of “Amazing Grace” on the violin for us. Listening to the violin in the cave felt especially solemn and sacred, explaining why many people choose to hold weddings in this unique location!
Tips
You will need to wear fully enclosed shoes. The steps aren’t particularly steep, but they can be slippery when wet.
The tour takes about an hour, and the guide provides detailed explanations. The kids’ favourite part was using torches to capture “Minecraft photos” of the crystals!
