Muriwai Beach, located on the west coast of Auckland, is just over half an hour’s drive from the city center. It’s famous for its black sand and is a popular spot for surfers to enjoy water sports.
What is Muriwai Beach known for?
This is one of the most beautiful places in New Zealand and a photographer’s paradise. It was once ranked among the top 30 scenic spots in the world by National Geographic Magazine. Additionally, Muriwai Beach boasts stunning sunsets, highly recommended!
The best lighting is from 3 pm to 5 pm on sunny afternoons. Lay on the beach, relax, and await the sunset for a delightful holiday experience!
This is a habitat for gannets, and from August to March each year, around 1,200 pairs of gannets come here to nest and raise their young, creating a spectacular sight. Sometimes, you might even spot some mysterious visitors – seals sunbathing on the beach.
Apart from this, you can also go horseback riding at Muriwai Beach Horse Trek, experience thrilling water sports on the beach, go for shellfish gathering, hiking, surfing, and more!
Best time to visit Muriwai Beach
From August to March each year, thousands of gannets fly from Australia to Muriwai, Auckland, and build nests and hatch their eggs on the two upright triangular islands. Gannets have only one mate for their entire life, which can last up to 20 years. They only come together when they have offspring.
The Bird Island is located at the top left corner of the beach and has a dedicated trail. Follow the trail upwards, and you’ll find the legendary Bird Island amid the smell and sounds of the birds.
Getting to Muriwai Beach
There are no public buses that go directly to this location, so it’s recommended to drive yourself or hire a car. It’s about 45 kilometres from Auckland CBD. Take State Highway 16 (SH16) towards Helensville and turn left onto Muriwai Road when you reach Waimauku. Keep driving to the end, and you’ll arrive at Muriwai Beach.

Things to know before you go
Before you come, make sure to check the low tide times. It’s best to arrive about an hour before low tide. There might be a slight odour on the island, so be mentally prepared!
If you want to enjoy a stunning sunset, besides checking the weather forecast, it’s best to come in the afternoon when it’s not too hot, and it’s the perfect time!
