The Horizontal Falls – Waterfalls come in a Horizontal Form

horizontal waterfalls broome

Waterfalls are common and we all know they usually involve a drop in height, but have you ever heard of a horizontal waterfall?

The Horizontal Waterfalls, the only two pirate islands in the world, are located in Australia. Have you seen waterfalls flowing from the middle to both sides? The Horizontal Waterfalls in Western Australia is such a place.

Where is Horizontal Waterfalls

Located in Talbot Bay, Kimberley, Western Australia, the Horizontal Waterfalls is a rare horizon waterfall in the world. Unlike the waterfalls we usually see, here you will see a flow of water sandwiched between bays flowing from the middle to both sides, surging with cascading white waves.

The nearby city is Broome and the rural town is Derby. I feel that Western Australia and Broome have such a big attraction for us this year, especially as winter approaches. It is the best time to go there and have some fun!

What causes the waterfall to flow laterally and compress its journey?

The reason why the waterfall flows from the middle to both sides is actually due to tidal action. The world’s largest tidal movement occurs here. When the tide rises and falls, a large amount of seawater rushes to the cliff channel between the bays, forming a 4-meter high sea level difference and a unique horizon waterfall effect.

The Horizontal Waterfalls in Western Australia is not only rare because of its unique tidal effect, but also because it is the only place in the world where there are two horizontal waterfalls. Therefore, if you want to see such a unique scene, you can only come here.

Best ways to experience the Horizontal Waterfalls

Ride a boat and experience the horizontal drift. Most visitors who come here will choose to ride a boat and rush towards this magical horizontal waterfall, feeling the power of the exciting horizontal waterfall.

Take a plane and view the spectacular scene from the air. If riding a boat is the closest way to get to the horizontal waterfall, then taking a plane is the best way to appreciate the horizontal waterfall. Looking down from the air at the two horizontal waterfalls sandwiched between the cliffs, such a scene will definitely be unforgettable.

It is recommended to stay overnight in Broome or Kimberley to experience the leisurely life in these two towns.
