Many people do not recommend Mt Buller because it can get crowded. However, as a beginner, you cannot do without people around you. If you fall down, you might need someone to give you a hand. We strongly recommend Mt Buller for beginners.
Equipment and gear you will need
- Gloves and ski goggles cannot be rented, so you need to buy them in advance! You can get them for a very cheap price at Rebel. If you plan to ski long-term, consider getting a set of ski clothes.
- Clothing: We would recommend wearing a scarf! It’s important to protect your neck from the strong wind. You can also wear a hat, like a woollen cap. Make sure to wear a waterproof jacket & pants along with a warm set of ski thermals to keep you warm and dry on the mountain.
- Food and drink: You can bring a thermos, and there are simple food options available on the mountain. You don’t have to worry too much! You can also bring a couple of chocolate bars!
Why we recommend Mt Buller for beginners
- Short distance! It only takes 3.5 hours to get from Melbourne to Mt Buller, so you can go there and come back on the same day. It’s great for friends who can’t travel long distances! Two days is a more relaxed pace, but you can also choose to ski for two days!
- Crowded, so the snow is softer. The first slope after taking the cable car has the softest snow, which is easier to brake on for beginners since they cannot ski too fast. Softer snow makes it easier to brake.
- Cheaper prices. Apart from the nearest Mt BawBaw, this mountain is probably the cheapest ski resort in Victoria. Renting ski gear and clothes costs only $93 for a set. You can also go with a tour group, such as MelbourneFun, which includes all costs.
Additional tips for those going to ski for the first time
We recommend using a snowboard for beginners. If it’s your first time skiing, taking a class to learn the basic snowplough technique is better, which will allow you to start skiing.
You must take the cable car to the top of the mountain. It’s really beautiful! Don’t forget to grab a cup of hot chocolate and enjoy the scenery, it’s amazing. You also need to bring coins worth ten dollars or five dollars for the locker. You won’t get change!
