As the little train slowly chugs along, it feels like you’ve been travelling back in time to the last century. Following the train’s whistle, sitting comfortably in your seat, breathing in the fresh air, relaxing, and enjoying this rare and wonderful moment!
Belgrave Station to Puffing Billy
Belgrave would be your starting point, located in the 227-meter-high Dandenong National Park. The station building is designed in the style of a British countryside station, giving visitors a feeling of tranquillity and beauty. The first train departs at 10:30 am daily, passing through the National Forest Park, with stunning scenery.
Menzies Creek is the largest station on the line. You can get off here to visit the famous Puffing Billy Museum, which houses a collection of early Australian and European steam locomotives, as well as exhibits featuring numerous texts and images.
Lakeside is a popular destination for many visitors. Here, there is a restaurant where you can grab some simple food and coffee, take some photos in the area, or bring your own food for a picnic!
Gembrook is the end station, 13km from Belgrave, located in the centre of a scenic lake park. Local Melburnians often come here with their families during holidays for camping and relaxation.
Best Puffing Billy Route
It is recommended to depart from Belgrave and return from Lakeside (a half-day trip). Duration wise, the one-way trip takes about an hour (with one to two hours of free time upon arrival at Lakeside).
You can navigate to Belgrave station by car, or take the Belgrave Line train from Melbourne’s central train station to Belgrave station (about 70 minutes away). Upon arrival, follow the signs on the platform to Puffing Billy Station.

Ticket Price: Adult tickets cost AUD 61, and children’s tickets cost AUD 31.5.
Additional Tips
- Book your tickets in advance! Arrive at least half an hour early on the day of your trip!
- It can get chilly during the train ride, so make sure to bring easy-to-wear clothing!
- Wear a mask and sunglasses. There may be coal dust during the train ride, so it is recommended to wear dark clothing and avoid opening your mouth too wide!
