On January 1, 2025, we visited what is said to be the largest Yayoi Kusama exhibition in the world at NGV Melbourne.
Having seen Kusama’s exhibitions in Shanghai and other countries, we would say this one is next level! NGV has put in a lot of effort for Yayoi Kusama’s solo exhibition. The trees along St Kilda Road have been wrapped in fabric, the water curtain at the NGV entrance has a special design, and polka dot balloons have been hung under the colorful glass ceiling at the back.
As soon as you enter, you can take a photo of the giant pumpkin in the Atrium, then take the elevator up to the second-floor platform for another shot. Next, visit the children’s activity area for a quick photo before it gets crowded with kids!
As usual, the entire ground floor is dedicated to this major exhibition. The first exhibition area on the right showcases Kusama’s paintings, small art pieces, and fashion designs. If you’re not familiar with her work, this section provides insight into her creative journey.
The experience
Infinite Mirror Room – The moment you step inside, it truly feels like falling into another dimension. The lights reflect endless versions of yourself, it’s absolutely surreal!
Polka Dot World – This is the classic Yayoi Kusama style, the entire exhibition space is covered in colourful polka dots, making you feel like you’ve stepped into her mind!
Pumpkin Sculpture – The iconic pumpkin is incredibly cute with dreamy colours. A must-visit photo spot.
Exhibition Story – Seeing her old diaries and handwritten notes reveals how her art has been a form of self-healing. This moment was truly touching.
Tickets
You can buy online in advance from the official website 38 AUD. There’s a 5 AUD booking fee, but you can select your preferred session. Buying at the venue might mean a long wait or no tickets left. Even online, book at least a day ahead—our friend booked half a day in advance and only got the 5 PM slot.
Tickets are non-transferable, non-refundable, and you can’t change the entry time after purchase.
Tips
What to wear Opt for solid-coloured outfits black, white, beige, yellow, pink, etc. The exhibition is visually intense with high saturation and dense patterns, so avoid busy prints to prevent visual overload.
Entry process You can scan your ticket 30 minutes before your session. The exhibition is divided into two parts—you must visit Part I first before proceeding to Part II. If you skip to Part II, you can’t go back. Confirmed by staff.
Mirror rooms Each Infinity Mirror Room allows only 20-25 seconds per person. While waiting, clean your phone lens, open your camera app, set resolution or aspect ratio, and plan your poses. The moment you step in, start snapping!
