The new Sydney New Fish Market is already turning into one of those must-visit spots. The new fish market officially opened on January 19 and we went on day one around 10:30am and it was already packed!
The new market itself is huge, three levels in total. The marketplace is on level two, level one is for auction and level three is office space. Some shops are still not open yet.
Food wise, it was okay. Prices are on the higher side and the taste is decent. I actually felt like I enjoyed the old fish market a little bit more. The seating here is quite limited so you might end up standing and eating in the crowd which can get tiring.
A better time to go is late afternoon or evening. A friend went on a Saturday night and said it was much less crowded, you get the sunset, and the whole atmosphere feels more relaxed and enjoyable.
Overall it’s definitely worth checking out once. The building, views and overall vibe make it feel like a new Sydney landmark, just pick the right time to go.
We went with Nicholas Seafood, the classic spot. You come up from the parking via the long escalator and it’s right there. The seafood selection is huge and super fresh, and the environment is way nicer than the old market
We ordered lobster pasta, oysters and sashimi. Sitting outside you can see the Anzac Bridge, and from the main entrance you can even see Barangaroo. Also no annoying seagulls anymore which is a big win.
Nicholas Seafood also has cooked food so it’s quite kid friendly. Even though it was opening day and very crowded, the wait for ordering and food wasn’t actually too bad. Kids can just hang around the steps and time passes pretty quickly.
Where to park
There is underground parking at the new fish market, 20 minutes free and around 30 dollars for 2 hours. It’s right underneath the building and easy to access.
Parking nearby streets like Darling Street in Glebe can actually easier. There are plenty of street spots, usually 2 hours free, and it’s about a 5-minute walk to the fish market
We went again on a weekend at lunch time and honestly the experience felt very different. It was extremely crowded, almost every shop had long queues and it was more standing and waiting than actually enjoying. If you don’t like crowds, this time is not ideal
