Melbourne Diamond Valley Miniature Railway

Melbourne Diamond Valley Miniature Railway

Many communities have miniature trains, but the Diamond Valley miniature train is arguably the best in terms of value for money! It operates every Sunday from 11 AM to 5 PM, with long running hours and many types and numbers of trains. Tickets are just $4, and children under 2 ride for free, definitely worth it!

For those who couldn’t get tickets for the Puffing Billy steam train, we highly recommend trying the Diamond Valley miniature train! It’s a scaled-down, fully realistic miniature version of Melbourne trains, like riding a toy Thomas the Tank Engine in a tiny world. There are lots of adults enjoying it too, as well as many parents with kids.

The riding experience at Diamond Valley Railway

Rather than calling it a ride, it’s more like a mini train museum. The trains, tracks, signals, and barriers are all built to Victorian train standards. You can see trains and signal devices from different eras.

The train has one seat per row, and you’re snugly placed inside. You go through tunnels, see traffic lights, and even have people waving at you. For just a few dollars, you get two full rounds, which is incredible value for money. We’ve taken our kids on countless rides over the years, and every time we had a great time.

Most recently, we were lucky enough to ride on a steam locomotive, which whistles and steams during the journey which is super fun!

Things to do nearby

Within walking distance, there are two small-to-medium-sized playgrounds, and nearby there are food trucks and ice cream vans. Before taking the train, we usually plan nearby activities.

If you’re looking for a great playground, we recommend Eltham North Adventure Playground or Diamond Creek Regional Playspace, both of which have been renovated in recent years with plenty to play!

If you’re interested in getting close to animals, make sure to check out the Edendale Community Environment Farm. Although it’s not big, there are quite a few animals to see, and the atmosphere is nice. The best part is that it’s free.
