Why do we celebrate?
- Celebrate the struggle, collective action and strength shown by our fellow unionists throughout history, which have led to the improved wages and conditions we have today
- Celebrates the achievements of the Labour Movement in obtaining improved economic for the workforce in the 19th century
- Celebrates the adoption of an eight-hour working day
- Prior to the adoption of an eight-hour workday, or the 40-hour work week, Australian workers typically worked up to 14 hours a day (and six days a week)
History of May Day
- The first May Day (or Labour Day) parade was held in Melbourne on April 21st, 1856
- Labour Day was first officially commemorated in 1912 and falls on the first Monday of May every year
